Have you tried Bookmarks? They do exactly what you're suggesting :)

But the large labels obscure what's below them..

Yeah, that annoys me too. I'll add an option for hiding labels or fade-on-hover or something soon.

I added a "Bookmarks > Show Callouts" toggle, so the callout labels can be shown/hidden as necessary. Also, callouts are a little more transparent than they were previously (it doesn't really hurt the visibility of the callout, and allows actually seeing through them).
