Awesome Images Awesome

dust mite

A curated list of amazingly awesome free (stock) photo resources for your projects. Inspired by all the other awesome awesomeness out there.

Contributing

I want this to become a truly awesome resource. Devs should be able to take a look and choose a great resource without googling for hours.

  • If you have any suggestions on how to make this better, open an issue.
  • If you have a resource to contribute, make a pull request. Please just use add resource.com in your commit message.
  • Please keep the format in alphabetical order.
    • In vim: Select the lines to be sorted in "Visual Line" mode with Shift + V and invoke the "sort" function with :sort.
    • In SublimeText: Just select the lines to be sorted and hit F5.

Please make sure the provider isn't some EvilCorp™ that'll send nice letters with a hefty price tag through their attorneys later on.

ToDo

  • figure out which data beside the licences is interesting/important
  • figure out a good way to format and represent the data

awesome-images's Issues

Is this still being updated?

I've tried to add a site or two and created a pull request but authentication fails from Github Desktop. It seems like it's been a bit since updates were added.

GPL-safe sources identified

It would be helpful to know which sources provide GPL-compliant images throughout the site rather than having to read through the licensing details of every image. I'd love to see these sources identified in some way. A tag. A separate section. Whatever works. I know some of that info is there currently, but I'm lazy and would like it to stand out a bit more.

    console.log(t + "," + s);
    }

"most images are free of licences" is bad, not good

magdeleine.co - hand picked, most images are free of licences

It is either misleading (images are in public domain or similar) or it should be removed - free of licence means that it falls in "copyrighted as much as possible".

Searchable/sortable list

I really like the idea of a single master list of free image sources. I was fiddling around with Jekyll and decided this would be a good project to try out Jekyll and GitHub Pages, so I created http://dpfavand.github.io/free-stock-images/ with a repo at https://github.com/dpfavand/free-stock-images. It lists quite a few of the sites in this repo, but I haven't had time to add them all yet.

It's basically the same idea as this repo, just a bit more structured, and perhaps eventually a nice website. Of course I'm open to new and better ideas of how to structure this, what information is important, how to do ratings, etc. Is this something you'd be interested in collaborating on?

add or remove "awesome"

going forward, how should we manage the repos in the organization? should they have the "awesome" in the title or is that implied 😬

AwesomeOpenSource

We are creating a github org for all awesome open source repos. I am working with a few individuals who are also managing their own awesome repos, and I think to gain more traction we need to work together. What are your thoughts about collectively moving your awesome repos to https://github.com/AwesomeOpenSource

The idea is that visibility for these repos would be increased due to more traffic to the org. What are your thoughts? Let me know if there is anything you'd like to discuss!

need to clarify the Flickr listing

Regarding Flickr, there are copyright issues with that site. Many, many photographers and university media relations centers have Flickr channels (several of which I know personally), and their repositories ARE copyrighted; they're only on Flickr to make distribution easier to people who have the legal right to use them.

Perhaps that Internet Book Image Archive collection specifically (what the current Flickr link goes to) isn't copyrighted? I'm not familiar with it, and I couldn't quickly determine just looking at it.

Flickr DOES have a copyright-released commons area, though. I would recommend providing a link to that but clarifying that most images on Flickr are copyrighted unless they're specifically designated otherwise.

P.S. - I love this resource! Thank you for curating this list. I teach a class on PowerPoint and Multimedia integration, coach faculty on course design, and I also write a lot of answers on Quora about this subject, and in all 3 venues I talk alot about copyright & digital media and I like to be able to recommend resources that aren't copyrighted or restricted. This list is extremely helpful for those purposes and is much appreciated.

Validate pull requests with Travis

Hello, I wrote a tool that can validate README links (valid URLs, not duplicate). It can be run when someone submits a pull request.

It is currently being used by

Examples

If you are interested, connect this repo to https://travis-ci.org/ and add a .travis.yml file to the project.
