nibble8

Yet another Rust crate for a Chip-8 interpreter, using sdl2.

Prerequisites

The Rust toolchain should be installed.

SDL2 development library >= 2.0.5 must also be installed. See here for installation instructions.

Usage

From source

git clone https://github.com/hgrsd/nibble8
cargo run --release <path_to_rom.ch8>

Install binary

cargo install nibble8
nibble8 <path_to_rom.ch8>

Running the test suite

cargo test

Implement sound

Sound is currently unimplemented, although we do have a sound timer that can be set and decrements with ticks.

We should use SDL2 to play a sound as long as the sound timer's value > 0.

Use texture to draw to Canvas

Currently, drawing the display state to an SDL2 canvas is done by iterating over each bit of the display state and drawing the bitmap bit-by-bit.

This is relatively slow, because every call to draw_point actually interacts with the framebuffer. I'd like to use a texture instead and copy it to the framebuffer in one operation.

Improve keyboard input

The current means of registering keyboard input is to poll the SDL event pump for events, and registering a key if it is pressed. This also sets the "current key".

The keyboard state is cleared every n iterations.

This approach is very basic and does not lead to a very nice input experience. I'd like to have a more responsive means of registering key presses.

Improve timer decrements

We currently decrement the sound and delay timer once every abritary n ticks. We should try to get this to align with the actual CHIP-8 implementation - a decrement rate of 60hz.
