outlookbackupaddin's Introduction

Installation requirements:
==========================
 - .Net Framework 4.0
 - Installed Microsoft Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010
 - For Outlook 2010 without SP you need to install the VSTO runtime:
   https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48217

Installation instructions:
==========================
1) Unzip the download to a destination folder, e.g. c:\Program Files\Codeplex\Outlook-Backup
2) Run OutlookBackupAddIn.msi and follow the instructions on the screen
3) A certificate warning will show up. Accept the certificate in order to get the plugin installed

Manual registration of the add-in
==================================
You can manually register the add-in via the command line.
Change the current path to the installation folder and run:
BackupExecutor.exe /register

Usage instruction:
==================
1) Open Outlook and choose "Backup" on the ribbon bar
2) Open the settings window and select the pst-files, the time interval (in days), the target Folder, and Location
    of the file "backupexecutor.exe" (e.g. c:\Program Files\Codeplex\Outlook-Backup\backupexecutor.exe)
Afterwards, press "save" to save your settings.
3) When you Exit Outlook the first time, the backup should start automatically

Uninstall instructions:
=======================
You can manually uninstall the plugin.

Depending on the Office and Windows installation (32 or 64 Bit) you must delete a registry key
which can be found in one of these subtrees:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\Codeplex.BackupAddIn
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\Codeplex.BackupAddIn

Delete the complete key named "Codeplex.BackupAddIn".

Another possibility is to run "BackupExecutor.exe /unregister" from the command line within the installation folder.

Afterwards, you can also remove the installation folder.

outlookbackupaddin's Issues

codeplex Failed to copy file

Anyone know how to fix this...

In the last few days i got this message when attempting to backup outlood with Codeplex

codeplex Failed to copy file: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file

I already reset Advanced System Settings, temp files in Environmental Variables to c:\windows
temp

But that didn't work?

I am a low-tech person, not a coder.

Please advise.

hide OST file from the backup list

Hello,
do you think should be possible to hide the .OST file from the list of Outlook file to backup?
I think there is no reason to backup that file and if you have a long list of PST archive could be hard to notice the .OST in the middle of the list.
Maybe is possible to add an option like "Backup all PST file" alternative to "Backup all shown file" under the full list of file. Otherwise maybe is possible to add a registry key or an option in a configuration file to set the list of desired visible file extension.

Anyway thanks for your plug-in!

can't make it work

hi, i am possibly missing the obvious but can't seem to make the addin work. i installed it (no errors, it shows in the "programs and features" list but not visible in outlook.
when i manually try to add the addin outlook tells me it is not a valid office addin:

i use windows 10 and outlook 365 version 1911 Click-to-Run
any suggestions are welcome

Missing Setup.Exe

A couple of the links to the outlookbackuppaddin done't have the setup files on them... Finally found one that had it.

Including Archive PST in backup

Outlook normally doesn't keep the AutoArchive archive PST attached in the folder list. It may be attached during an AutoArchive, by option Advanced > AutoArchive > AutoArchive Settings > During AutoArchive: Show archive folder in folder list, but even then it will disappear after the AutoArchive is complete.

How can you set the Backup addin to back up the archive PST?

You can manually attach to the archive PST and then select it in the Backup settings. But that only lasts as long as the archive is attached. If you detach it and then check the settings it will be gone again.

Some ost files do not appear as options for backup

2 of my 4 ost mail files don't appear as options to include in the backup. These 2 email accounts are imap rather than exchange mail accounts, but outlook 2016=office 365 saves the mail accounts as .ost files in the same directory location as my other 2 exchange accounts. Any ideas?

Version 1.7.0 appears as 1.6.0 in Programs and Features / Win 10 Pro x64

After removing version 1.6.0 in Programs Features in preparation for installing version 1.7.0, I installed version 1.7.0. After installing 1.7.0 I checked Programs and Features and found it appears as version 1.6.0.

Outlook 2019 Add in compatiblity

Hello,

Thank you for great works on this add-in.
Could you please tell me if it will be a support of Office 2019 ?

Regards,
Edouard Li.

Cant get add-in to activate - no "Backup" on the ribbon.

I am working on a family members Windows 10 w/Outlook 2013 x64 Pro Plus. The 1.7 Add-in is listed within Outlook, however, always unchecked. If you check it, it un-checks immediately after you OK'ing the add-in window, without even re-starting outlook (all other add-ins keep the setting you specify).

Ive done everything I can find in the help on Github:

  • Uninstalled/reinstalled.
  • Disabled AV etc.
  • Disabled other ad-ins.
  • Checked the Event logs (cant find anything relevant).
  • Re-registered the add-in at an admin command prompt, which says:
    Detected Office 64 Bit
    Fetching Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook..
    Creating subkey Addins
    Creating subkey Codeplex.BackupAddIn
  • Hunted the registry to see if Outlook is stating this addin has crashed or something and is disabled (no it hasnt)
  • The add-ins within the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Outlook area does exist (which is backed up by Outlook showing the add-in within the interface).
  • Checked the OST and PST files for permissions (the user is Owner and has full control on both files).

The one and only one thing I cannot find is a regkey that back in October last year, on a post on here, its suggested HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CodePlex\BackupAddIn\ should be created, and it doesnt exist. Ive run the command line util with /register multiple time, from both Command Prompt and Powershell Admin Prompt (not that it should make a difference).... but nothing works to create this regkey.

Everything else on the machine seems to check out..... Has anyone any suggestions at all? Or perhaps a regfile/list of what should be in that regkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CodePlex\BackupAddIn\

Thanks!

sync only changed parts

hey,

isn't there a possibility via xcopy command to only copy changed parts of the outlook pst file? So when you do every day a backup, it souldn't copy the wohle pst, which is about 5 Gigs.

Backin Addin not available after install

Hello,

I have installed the Backup Addin 1.7, but it does not appear on the Outlook 2016 Pro Plus toolbar.
Also checked the disabled add-ins settings area, and it's not disabled there.

Any idea why it would not be appearing?
I previously had it installed with a different edition of Office on the same machine. I uninstalled the old Office without uninstalling the Backup addin first. I tried a repair and uninstall/reinstall of the Backup Addin, but it still won't appear even though it reinstalls normally. Something is corrupted somewhere.

GPO Problem "Destination path of backup"

Hello,

thanks for for this great tool.
We are currently using and testing the GPO abilities.
Most of it is working as expected but if we provide a Backup path over the "Destination path of backup" option the path is not reachable.
Sample Path: \\Server\pst$\%username%
The Path is correctly shown in the setting but if we save it always state: Destination-folder doesn't exists!

If I delete it and type exactly the same manually it works without issues. If I copy the path line from the settings window and copy it to a explorer windows it also fails. If I type it by hand again it's working. Also if I copy it first to notepad and then to the explorer or back to the Destination Line it fails.

Means from the appearance it's absolutely same but the effect is different.

This option would be really handy for us so I hope it is a solveable issue.

Thanks in advance.

Add in cannot find path to backup directory

I have one user who's backup add in, after being set up and working properly for approx a week. Suddenly cannot find the directory. Re-choosing the same directory fixes the issue for approx a week. This has happened 3 times to the same user.

backup add in error

Immediate Backup.

Nice to have... in the Backup tab in Outlook in addition to Settings a "Backup Now" selection which causes an immediate backup when Outlook ends (rather than as per the schedule). For use when very important emails arrive which you want to preserve immediately.

PST size

This tool is excellent and works well.

Is it possible to add some feature, to show the size of PST.

Which will inform user, if the PST grows beyond a particular size.

You can give it a thought.

Cheers !

10 second delay before starting backup and cancel button

Hello,
because my backups take up to 8 minutes and it consumes a lot of network power it is unpleasant when I close outlook and the backup starts unintended immediately without any change to stop it. Could you think about putting a 10 seconds count down on a dialog with a cancel button with shifts the backup to the next closing of outlook?
Best regards
D.

Upgrade

I have 1.6.0 version installed.

And tried to run 1.7.0 installer. It prompted me to uninstall old version, and later 1.7.0 got installed.

Can upgrade (in place) be taken care in subsequent versions..

backup settings greyed out

This addin looks very promising, but after I'd installed it, the Backup tab appears in the ribbon but is greyed out, i.e. I can't use it. What haven't I done?

No file location shown in Outlook-Files box

I'm moving to a new laptop and used the OutlookBackupAddin file that I used on my previous laptop but when I go to setup the backup options, there are no file locations listed under Outlook-Files. I uninstalled and downloaded the latest app (1.9) and tried again, but nothing shows. I tried to unhide hidden directories, but that didn't work either. The error I get indicates no files for backup selected. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Outlook 2013 just as I have on my previous laptop. OS is Windows 10 just as it is on my previous laptop.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Failed to copy file: More data is available

One of my .pst files is bigger than 4GB.

The backup works as long the destination file does not exists.
If it does exists then at some point during copying I get "Failed to copy file: More data is available" and the backup stops.

I am using Windows 10 64-bit, Microsoft Outlook 2010 32-bit.

Look at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winbase/nf-winbase-copyfileexa
dwCopyFlags COPY_FILE_NO_BUFFERING and COPY_FILE_RESTARTABLE may fix the problem (not sure).

Installation

Hello,

Quite possibly i am being dense and this is something im doing wrong.

I am having issues installing since i cannot find setup.exe in the zip folder.

This app rocks and im glad you are still supporting it.

Thank you

Settings dialog shows no entries

After installing the dialog leaves blank. I can fill in entries and save them. But next time i open settings dialog, entries are blank again. I can find reg keys in registry and manually modify them.
After closing Outlook, backup is working fine.

When Backup Encounters an Error: Prompt to Close [Enhancement]

In an effort to make this addin more user friendly, options need to be provided to the user when the backup fails due to an error.

As far as I can tell, the application will exit when there is no error. When there is an error, the application just sits there and waits for the user to hit the close button on the window. While this is important for error reporting, user's who are not tech savvy may be unsure how to handle the fact that the window isn't closing or offering a way to handle the problem.

My suggestion (and/or request) is that you add a simple message indicating that there was a problem with the backup, and a simple "Okay" button to close the application window. This would improve the UX significantly in the event that something goes wrong.

Outlook 2016

It was working perfectly, and still works on my laptop, but somehow Office Home & Business 2016 wasn't working properly, I reinstalled, and now can't install the OutlookBackupAddIn to my Outlook - I downloaded 1.7, but it doesn't show as an Add-In, and when I go to Options Add-Ins Manage(Go) and then Add I can't add any of the dll files - I just get a message that it's not a valid Office Add-In. Help. This is the greatest pst auto backup program ever since Outlook drop theirs.

grandfather-father-son backups

Hi. Thanks for creating outlookbackupaddin. Just started using it with Outlook 2019. Question: Is it possible to save daily backups using a grandfather-father-son rotation scheme so that, once established, each subsequent backup finishes by deleting the oldest one? I'm concerned that if I only have a single backup, as currently configured, and it somehow that copy gets corrupted, I'll have nothing to fall back on. Possible? Hoping so.

silent mode

Hello,
Thanks for this great addin !
Is there a way to start a silent mode backup (no window showing up) ?
Another functionality that would be great is to execute a backup (in silent mode) while outlook is running (using VSS) to backup files in background.

Maybe this could be usefull, I don't know :

Let me know !
Thank you.

Backup Stuck @ Summing up file sizes ...

We recently upgraded from 1.7.0 to 1.9.0, on Windows 10 (64 bit), with Outlook 2016 32 bit.

We have not prob with 1.7.0, but 1.9.0 we get this message, and it never proceeds to backup.

Error: "Failed to copy file: The parameter is incorrect"

I am getting this error in Outlook 2016 Version 1804. Below is a copy of the log:

Starting backup...please wait...
Check whether outlooks is still running ...
Found outlook with PID 4484

I have tried uninstalling, unregistering, and reinstalling version 1.7 however the error stays the same. Initially we had a problem as the drive letter for the backup location changed when we switched to a new USB drive. Once that was corrected this error occurred.

Thanks in advance, and help is appreciated.

Setup.exe file

Sorry maybe being stupid but where is the Setup.exe file as cannot find it in base of any folder?
Am I missing something here!?
Many thanks in advance.

Error messages unrelated to actual error.

I had the destination for backups set as on the E disk. Due to a system update the disk became reassigned to F. When Outlook Backup ran I got a bunch of error messages related to an instance of Outlook not being found, rather than the backup destination. On checking Settings I found the destination had been blanked out. Entering the new destination fixed the problem. Confusing and not intuitive.

Backup not done

Hi, I am using MS Windows 10 64bit, and Outlook 2016. I have a .mail.de account for emails and a .outlook.de account for calendar.
Only a .ost file of the .outlook.de account was created. As far as I understand, this is no backup that can be used to restore my account after new istallation.

Simply does not work with Outlook 2016 ProPlus

There are multiple problems when used with Office 2016 ProPlus (Enterprise). In brief: (1) Long waits after the message indicating it's trying to get the file lock. None of the PST files are locked. This happens for every PST file. (2) There is no long wait to get the file lock for the OST file, but it never gets it and gives up almost immediately. (3) It does claim, once it does lock each PST file, that it's backing it up. However, a binary compare of the original with the backup copy reveals literally tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands (or even millions+) of differences. It does not make a bit-for-bit copy of the original file. (4) It hangs on the last PST file that is selected to be backed up. That said, it allocates a file of the correct size for that file, but no data is ever copied into it. (5) The backups that it does appear to make get made about four to seven times as fast as a simple file copy. I don't see how this program can make bit-for-bit copies any faster than Windows Explorer (or another backup utility). For example, it supposedly copies one of my 9GB PST files in 17 seconds (to a file server across a gigabit LAN connection). That's impossible (as long as my switch does not run any faster than 1Gb).

can not install using MS-Store version of outlook

I got a new PC that came with Office 365 trial. M$ apparently has two types of office 365 available for use now. the traditional desktop installed version you get from visiting the M$ office site, and the windows store version which while it operates and looks identical, it is indeed different. the outlookbackupaddin works for the traditiona; desktop install version, but does not work for the ms store version. I did a back door install by installing the traditional version side by side the store version, and I then had two separate copies of all the office programs.

I tried to use the outlookbackup.vsto to install the addin into the store version, but it calls on files not in the outlookbackupaddin installed files. I found out which files were needed, and fortunately, windows already had copies of the files, all located under various directories in c:\windows\microsoft.net\assembly\gac_msil\

I thought I could copy the files over to the backupaddin directory, but this resulted In a hash mismatch error for Microsoft.visualstudio.tools.applications.runtime.dll

the files which the .vsto reported as missing are as follows:
Microsoft.VisualStudio.Tools.Applications.Runtime.dll
Microsoft.Office.Tools.Common.dll
Microsoft.Office.Tools.Outlook.dll

on my system with only the store version of office installed windows keeps these files in the following locations:
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Tools.Applications.Runtime\v4.0_10.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Tools.Applications.Runtime.dll

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.Office.Tools.Outlook\v4.0_10.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Microsoft.Office.Tools.Outlook.dll

here is the first error found when I tried to install the addin manually using the .vsto file:
