Hi @janwuyts,
that should work. The main reason I can see why it doesn't work is with the system path and relative paths.
What happens if you append to the system path an absolute directory? e.g. os.getcwd() + '/..'

no, from Carnets point of view, it seems like each notebook is in it's own subdirectory

Ah, I think I understand.

You need to open the whole directory in Carnets if you want Carnets to access the entire directory.
The method is as follows: navigate to the place that contains the directory you want to open, click on "Select" at the top left corner, click next to the directory, click "Open" (top left corner again).

You will then see the familiar Jupyter file browser. Now, all the notebooks have access to the content of the directory (but not neighbouring directories).

Once you have opened the directory using Select-click-Open, you have granted Carnets permission to access the entire directory. If you navigate to the file using iOS interface, you only grant access to the file. As someone else pointed out, the interface is not entirely intuitive.
