humblenewtabpage's Issues

FYI - Chrome Dev 28.0.1478.0 breaks the focus in omnibox that has been working

I guess we concluded last time that there is nothing you can do, but I just noticed that the change from Chrome Dev 28.0.1469.0 to Dev 28.0.1478.0 breaks the focus in omnibox again. This time even the first instance of the page lacks focus. Disable Humble and the focus returns.

I don't remember what changed to make it work last time - probably a Chrome version.

Looks like there is a bug already:
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=232148&q=focus%20omnibox&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Iteration%20ReleaseBlock%20Cr%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified

You might want to star it... In case that makes any difference...

Open recently closed windows

Hi there,

Thanks a lot for your New Tab Page! Especially with the introduction of Chrome's useless new tab page, it is inevitable for me to use an extension like yours.

It is perfect except for one thing. I miss the ability to open recently closed windows and not just tabs. The old Chrome new tab page had that feature.

So let's say you had a window with a bunch of opened tabs which you are closing. The old Chrome new tab page was able to open all these tabs in a new window.

Is it possible to implement something like that in HumbleNewTabPage next to the ability to open recently closed tabs?

Thanks for listening!

Robert

[Feature] Filter search functionality

A nice feature addition would be to have search box at the top of the page with the ability to do a filter search similar to the filter search functionality in Chrome's Bookmark Manager - chrome://bookmarks/

Options synchronization

I use many computers, and I bet many people use at least two.
While your extension already uses built-in bookmark synchronization,
I don't believe you synchronize your options, like background color, position
of folders open on the screen, etc.

I believe it is fairly simple to add it,
given that Chrome now has the storage.sync API.
Are you planning to add such a feature?

Other than that, your extension is super awesome! :)

Open recently closed tab in same tab

Dear @quodroc,

Currently recently closed tabs open in a new tab, meaning that I am left with an unused humble new tab. Could this behaviour be changed to open the recently closed tab in the same tab (the current humble new tab page).

Thankfully,

Robert

Recently Closed not respecting number of items settings

I'm on Chrome v51--so I realize this isn't HNTP's fault.

I have my number of items in Recently Closed set to 5--yet, I have 25 showing up in the list right now. The list grows and grows--disregarding the limit in Settings.

Most visited limited to 10 sites after Chrome update

Hello,

The most visited section is limited to 10 sites after the recent Chrome update.

You can select 20, select 10, uncheck the option and it is always at 10.

This is happening on Version 63.0.3239.108 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Feature Require

Can it have a column like speeddial that shows some fixed items.

Return to default.

Does not work (Win 7 & 8.1 - Firefox 57.1 portable or not) ... returns to all default settings after reboot/restart.

Allow customization of each columns width

Hello,

First I want to say how much I love this extension. I use it so many times every day at work and home. It has been a real help in efficiency and joy to use.

Because I use it so much, I have it very customized to my liking, as much as the options allow. One thing I would really like is to have the option to re-size each individual columns width. This is because one of my columns is a list of bookmarks whose text length exceeds the maximum allowed column width for most of the bookmarks in the list, while I have another column whose list of bookmarks have a text length that is very much under the set column width. I could make both columns bookmarks fully readable if I were able to slide the "slimmer" column over, giving room to the "wider" column to display the full text of each bookmark.

If this is already possible by Custom CSS, please let me know how it can be done! I have 4 columns currently. My "Generated CSS" is as follows: Is there a way to modify the width of each of my 4 columns individually here?

#main a { font-family: "Calibri"; }
#main a { font-size: 2.4em; }
#main a { color: #bfdfff; }
body { background-color: #e90740; }
#main a:hover { background-color: #e90740; }
#main a:hover { color: #b7f4ff; }
#main a:hover { box-shadow: 0 0 7px #313131; }
body { background-image: url(); }
body { background-position: top; }
body { background-repeat: no-repeat; }
#main a:hover { box-shadow: 0 0 7px #313131; }
#main a { border-radius: 0.2em; }
#main a { -webkit-transition-duration: 0.2s; }
#main a { line-height: 2; padding-left: 0.8em; padding-right: 0.8em; }
#main { width: 100%; }
#main { left: 0%; }
#main { margin-top: 7.549999999999999%; }
.wrap { -webkit-transition-duration: 0.2s; }
#options_button { opacity: 0; }

Thanks again for the great extension. Many in my office have switched to using it as their homepage too. Giving the option to set the background image is a small but great feature. Without it, it wouldn't be able to be as eye appealing as other competitors New Tab extensions, and I may have moved on, even with the great functionality it offers. Thanks!

REQUEST: Direct Edit, Drag & drop

Great extension. The only additional detail I would like to see is the option to edit individual bookmarks directly in the page (e.g., delete, move, add), without having to open bookmarks separately in FireFox. This may not be so easy to do, but worth asking! Thanks.

Firefox compatibility

Due to issue #27 ,

I'm tracking for Firefox compatibility. Lot of users are waiting for it and will be grateful !

Request: Allow duplicate folders

HumbleNewTabPage has wonderful affordances for creating a custom dashboard for my bookmarks...

I really like how dragging/dropping folders around doesn't actually change the structure of my bookmarks, and so it is a new interface to my bookmarks.

However! :P
I wish when I dragged/dropped a folder to a new column, or wherever, that it left that same folder in the original location too. i.e. I want to be able to have folders duplicated on my HumbleNewTabPage as many times as I want..

ERROR:content_settings_pref_provider.cc

Hi there,

When launching Chromium from the Linux command line, I get the following error, which according to the ID is the HumbleNewTabPage:

[11348:11348:0313/224731:ERROR:content_settings_pref_provider.cc(518)] Invalid pattern strings: chrome-extension://mfgdmpfihlmdekaclngibpjhdebndhdj/,

[11348:11402:0313/224735:ERROR:download.cc(356)] PostClientToServerMessage() failed during GetUpdates

Something I have to be worried about?

Thanks!

Firefox version slow to display with a lot of bookmarks

In the Firefox version, the Humble New Tab Page gets slower the more bookmarks there are. It can take several seconds to display the page if there are thousands of bookmarks. It takes just a split-second if there are only hundreds but a delay is still pretty noticeable.

It does not matter if the bookmarks are in a folder that's accessible on the page or in a location that's outside of the content that is enabled in the settings. The overall number of bookmarks that are saved in the Firefox bookmark database seems to be the only thing that changes the delay for displaying the page.

Make a Font Preview Page?

I think it would be helpful if you made a Font Preview Page. Since there's so many to choose from, it would be very helpful to see what they all look like at a glance. Moreover, it would be especially helpful if they could be sorted by type (serif, sans, handwritten, calligraphy, and so on).

I wouldn't mind making it in the fork I've started, but I cannot seem to find where the fonts are stored and/or pulled from in your repo.

Thanks a lot!

Ignores settings after some time

In the settings tab I disabled everything but "Bookmarks bar" because I just wanted to have the bookmarks there. So "Other bookmarks" and "Other device" is unchecked.

But after some time using (I'm using this app for over a year) those things are still rendered into my menu. This I consider a bug. I can give you my settings and also show a screenshot of my settings opened and the menus displayed.

If you need more help fixing it, I can assist you. Please answer me so I can know if this bug will be fixed eventually or I need to find a new extention for this, because this bug is totally annoying to me.

How do I split the bookmarks horizontally ?

Hello,

First off awesome! Tried literally hundreds of speed dial addons but found yours to match exactly my taste.
Now the question. All my bookmarks are placed vertically and I have to scroll way too much to reach the sites as the list is quite long so how do I split them horizontally ? say in two or three columns. Like the previews on the Mozilla addons page.
All my bookmarks are in one folder and I don't use weather.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. And thanks for this awesome addon. Great work!

Regards.

Style Columns

I'd like to be able to style the columns, so they have line between them. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to inspect the page to see what the page elements are in order to apply styling to things.

Could you add some options in the styling section to show how to style the columns? Ideally, i'd like them to be a slightly different color from the rest of the background.

I do just want to say though, I love this extension. It's so much better than any of the new tab pages I've I've seen, and I've tried at least 40.

I actually have a note file of all the additions and features I would like to see, but this is the simplest, and most straightforward of them.

The ultra compact, customizable, column based layout is something I wish I could have for everything else, especially my windows start menu. Keep up the good work.

Custom Links?

Is there a way to add custom links instead of using bookmarks? I would like to add some URLs, but not through bookmarks, sort of like "my top visited sites" as opposed to "recent sites". Basically being able to add in my own links. Is that possible?

[Feature] Handling apps and bookmarks directly

In the form of custom context menues (suggestion) you could manage content a little, for example enabling, disabling and removing of applications, edit a bookmark, create a new folder or just organize, directly from HNTP.

Centering Everything?

Hi there. I love your Chrome extension, but I'm not well versed in CSS. Can you tell me how I could change the generated CSS so that everything is Center-Aligned instead of Left-Aligned?

Here's my current, automatically generated, CSS:
`#main a { font-family: "Cantarell"; }

main a { font-size: 2.2em; }

main a { color: #3a3a3a; }

body { background-color: #ebebeb; }

main a:hover { background-color: #a37eff; }

main a:hover { color: #ebebeb; }

main a:hover { box-shadow: 0 0 33.31899999999999px #553fb9; }

body { background-image: url(); }
body { background-image: url(); }
body { background-position: left top; }
body { background-repeat: repeat; }
body { background-size: auto; }

main a:hover { box-shadow: 0 0 33.31899999999999px #553fb9; }

main a { border-radius: 1.5em; }

main a { -webkit-transition-duration: 0.2s; }

main a { line-height: 5.6; padding-left: 2em; padding-right: 2em; }

main { width: 400px; }

main { left: 6.280000000000001%; }

main { margin-top: 25.28px; }

.wrap { -webkit-transition-duration: 0.2s; }

options_button { opacity: 0; }

main { margin-top: 80px; width: 1000px; }

`

Any advice or even something I could copy and paste would be awesome!

Thanks a lot :)

Add pinboard bookmarks functionaility

Would it be possible to incorporate pinboard functionality to Humble?

While the site is a paid service, it would be an extremely useful feature to have available in humble, as I use the service extensively on other platforms to bookmark stuff to read later on my computer. While there are apps for that, I just think humble would be an ideal fit. APIs are available on the pinboard site

Please don't get favicons from Google

For the Firefox version of the extension, I see that the favicons are being fetched from s2.googleusercontent.com. This is a privacy concern especially considering a lot of people have corporate intranet URLs in their bookmarks.

Please consider the following three options to go forward on this:

  1. Remove favicons altogether.
  2. Get favicon from the URL's domain/favicon.ico.
  3. Provide an option to allow getting favicons from Google (off by default).

None of the above are perfect or ideal solutions, but I suppose they are okay until Firefox provides an API for the favicons.

Thank you.

PS: I couldn't find the source of the Firefox extension's newtab.js file in the repo so I couldn't submit a PR.

Mobile Bookmarks

The "Mobile Bookmarks" folder is added to my page by default, but there is no option to hide it. There are options to hide all of the other elements except this one.

Reversing the sort order of items

Hello,

thanks for this great extension!!! This is not a bug report but a feature request:

Since "Recent bookmarks" only shows a few items, it would be very helpful to be able to reverse the order in which bookmark items are sorted, i.e. put the newest ones atop!

Thank you.

Flo

Night mode

At night time, it would be awesome if the background turned black.

Would be pretty handy.

request:humblenewpage button next to options button

wish for a small feature, a humblepage button like the options button, when we click it, we would just see the picture or the color chosen to the humblenewpage background, then we click it and we see all the folders and links again, a simple "on/off" button. Thanks!

[Feature] Allow "Your Products" to be a toggable option in Content

You can view bookmarks, apps, weather, etc, and you should also be able to view your google "products". Products are located here: https://www.google.com/settings/products?hl=en

They include (by default): Alerts, Dashboard, Gmail, Google Chrome Sync, Picaasa Web Albums, Talk, Web History, Youtube

I really wanted to add "Dashboard" over in my apps column, but it is not an app. The only way to add it is to make a bookmark. I think this should be an option in Content to toggle. I would give this a 10/10 with this option available. For now, it's still a great 9/10. Absolutely love this.

Custom font

Hi,

This is my favorite new tab extension. The only thing it lacks, imo, is an option to change the font style. I think links would look much better with a smaller bold font. It would be great if there was also an option to change the font itself but it would probably be more time consuming to implement.

Or maybe I could change it myself by editing some file?

Different setting for every Firefox container

There is some unexpected behaviour with the Firefox version. Each individual Firefox container, a feature present in Firefox 57+, seems to get its own settings. For every container you must replicate the settings you want, which may not be all the difficult but seems somewhat weird when the data presented is for the whole Firefox session

Move bookmark back into folder

I accidently moved a bookmark subfolder out of the "bookmarks bar" folder and added it to another column. Unfortunately, I'm now unable to move the folder back into the bookmarks folder.

Translations

Hi, is it possible to implement translations?

Port to the Safari

Please port the extension to the Safari browser. Only it keeps me from going with Chrome.

Please make a firefox veersion!

now that firefox ships web api extension i could install this awesome chrome extension trough chrome foxified add on,well it works almost perfectly but unluckily humble new tab page wont show favicon also seems a bit slower than chrome.
thanks very much

"Most visited" using "Typed Count" instead of "Visit Count"

Shortly after I installed Humble last winter, I began to notice sites I'd visited only once invading my "most visited" list. I considered maybe Humble triggered this, but disabling it or deleting it didn't solve the problem. I've filed two bug reports with no real success:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=168311
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=178655

When I noticed the Omnibox focus problem was back, I went to your store site to see if there had been any version changes, and happened to notice a review there:
"I'm having trouble with the "most visited" section: it has stuff I rarely visit, and is missing stuff I frequently visit. It's got some sort of bug, unfortunately."

I contacted the reviewer, who replied:

Interesting. I continue to see the same issue after I disabled Humble - stuff I rarely visit (maybe only once) showing up, but not stuff I visit all the time. It could very well be that it's due to the type/link behavior you describe - if so I kind of feel bad blaming it on Humble, but it seems very suspicious that it started when I installed Humble. As it is, I'm using Awesome New Tab Page now because it's the most-configurable one I have found. I starred the thread, if that's any help getting someone to look at it. But now that I've configured a home screen using Awesome New Tab Page, I don't really care anymore :)

I have a hard time imagining how you could trigger this, but it is very suspicious that another user saw it right after installing Humble - months after I did, and probably with a totally different Chrome version. And his did not go back to normal after removing Humble, either.

Can you imagine any way you could be triggering the use of Typed Count instead of Visit Count? Does your most visited show sites you visit via links, or only things you manually type in the Omnibox?

Additional pages don't put focus in omnibox

The HumbleNewTabPage works perfectly for me except for one thing. When I start Chrome, the first instance appears with the input focus in Chrome's omnibox, so I can just start typing. But when I open an additional page with Ctrl+T or the little button, the omnibox does not get input focus. I'm not sure where it defaults; a single tab focuses the first item in column one. F6 does put the focus in the omnibox, but by the time I remember to press it I've usually already typed my whole query into the void.

I see the "custom CSS" box, but I don't know any way to set focus with CSS. And I don't know how to hack jscript into a Chrome Extension.

Could you maybe force the focus to the omnibox on every new page?

Close folders

Auto-close folders is not working for me. I install it today. The first few hours it worked but then it stopped.
I have google-chrome version: 40.0.2209.0 dev (64-bit)
