nextcloud-scanner's Introduction

Scanner - Scan images directly into NextCloud

Scanner is a NextCloud app which adds the ability to scan images from a local or network-available scanner (via the SANE tools) directly into Nextcloud.

Note: I've modified the Parameters so that I am able to scan with my Brother NetworkScanner MFC9142cdn using the original Brother print- and scandrivers from the support website.

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=de&lang=de&prod=mfc9142cdn_eu

I've also changed the call of scanimage - no sudo needed if the user (f.e. www-data) is in the group of the sane-backend. So it should be enough to add www-data to the sane group:

# usermod -aG sane www-data

Installation

  • Place the code in [your nextcloud folder]/apps/scanner
  • Make sure you have scanimage and pnmtojpeg binaries available
    • On Debian, these are provided by the sane-utils and netpbm packages
  • Ensure executing scanimage -L on your NextCloud server returns the correct scanner
    • Configuring SANE is beyond this README, but:
      • For scanners shared by another host, add the hostname to /etc/sane.d/net.conf
      • Make sure scanimage can be executed by the user that runs your webserver (for example www-data or apache)
        • You can add this line to your /etc/sudoers file (change the user to the corresponding one running the webserver): www-data ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/scanimage

Configuration

Currently Scanner has no settings, so there is no in-app configuration.

Usage

Scanner adds a new menu entry to the Files menu:

Selecting this will allow you to specify a filename as usual (default scan.jpg):

The app will then call scanimage to get a scan, and save the resulting image with the specified filename:

Known Issues

  • Only the default scanner is used for scanimage
    • If you have more than one scanner, scanimage will only use the first
