Some examples of the topics that I can think of and am going to work on adding:
Anything else you would recommend deserves a spotlight in this list?
This awesome list could use a nice simple minimalistic graphic on top of it.
I have created one in a couple of minutes (this one), but I'm far away from being satisfied with it, so if anyone wants to take a shot at creating something better, your help will be appreciated.
Not that Plasma 4 isn't a great desktop, but Plasma 5 has a more modern and attractive look.

Here is a list of package managers i contributed to. You might want to link to it:
https://github.com/nilsding/awesome-package-management
There are also a lot of other lists:
https://github.com/LewisVo/Awesome-Linux-Software
https://github.com/nodiscc/awesome-linuxaudio
https://github.com/Friz-zy/awesome-linux-containers
and probably more if you search some seconds more...
for all distros you can link to http://distrowatch.org/
CoreOS (aka Container Linux) was discontinued in 2020.
https://cloud.redhat.com/learn/topics/coreos
You may want to remove it from the list.
Or at least mention that it's discontinued.
Same as inputsh/awesome-c#6 ๐
Currently Cinnamon link points to https://developer.linuxmint.com/projects/cinnamon-projects.html, which results in "Not found".
But there is a working link that could replace the old one: https://projects.linuxmint.com/cinnamon/
Maybe adding CoreOS to the list is a good idea, as this is getting more traction.
great
The Wikipedia articles for the distros are often very short and not useful. Distrowatch provides much better information in a single paragraph.
I can see why you would put fedora in beginner, but it is also flexible enough to also be considered good for intermediate and even advanced users. I think that it should be put in all 3 tiers, unlike for example Ubuntu who's sole focus is beginners, while fedora targets the developer and more experienced user as well.
EDIT: The categories are now created but there's no content in them for now.
To add new content, please refer to the CONTRIBUTING.md
file.
As for the X Windows Managers
subsection, I've sent a request to @dhamaniasad to merge his content. There should also be some rules set in the CONTRIBUTING.md
file. I can't set them on my own because of my very limited experience in working with windows managers.
Many developers like listening to podcasts. I think podcasts are excellent media for both experienced and new Linux users and to subscribe.
A podcast list should include some of the best podcasts in the Linux community.
There's been an agreement that this list will be combined with dhamaniasad/awesome-linux.
Progress:
CONTRIBUTING.md
file stating the rules for including new X Windows Managers to the list.Distro-based Package Management Tools
)Other Desktop Environments
Cross-reference to the issue in that repository.
The current link to blackbox window manager, http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/, is dead.
I would have just made a PR to change it, but I'm not sure which link is preferred. Although the Sourceforge site is gone, the project is still there at https://sourceforge.net/projects/blackboxwm/. However, that page has a link saying the project was moved to https://github.com/bradleythughes/blackbox. That github project hasn't seen any activity in almost 3 years, though.
If there's people interested in making them and filling them with content, they will be added.
I'm looking through the documentation for the Linux kernel, and notice that some of these are useful for user-level Linux management, i.e. you can get useful information out of them even if you never do kernel development in your life (some types of configuration, mostly). Would it be OK if I added said documentation to this list, or is it not within scope?
I read the contribution guide and know that the idea is to only show the top 10 distributions on distrowatch, but having Arch as the sole example of an advanced distribution feels incomplete, almost as if it were the only example. Not to mention that Arch is not even on the top 10 anymore, so if this rule were to be followed the list would have no example of an Advanced Distro.
I propose Slackware and/or Gentoo get added, since they're very well known (both being at the top 50) and the usual examples of an advanced distribution.
I keep running into different sources where some of them list Enlightenment as a Desktop Environment (like Arch Wiki)and some of them list it as a Windows Manager (like @dhamaniasad did).
If there's someone who has practical experience in using it, I would love to hear their opinion.
Ranger is console based file manager that IMHO should be added to that list.

I find these sections to be way more scary than they should be.
While the WM section is kind of for advanced users only, I'm thinking of making it in the following format:
* [name](https://example.com/link) - Couple of words long description. Written in X. Licensed under Y.
...where X is a programming language, and Y is a license.
As for the DE section, I literally have no idea how to make it little less scary. Would love to reduce the space it takes, but screenshots are kind of important. Would still love for the top four DEs (GNOME, KDE, LXDE, XFCE) to have more attention than the rest of the DEs. Suggestions?
https://linuxacademy.com/ if anyone can add this site courses
I have checked ScudCloud from this list and I found out it is inactive since 2018.
It is an archived project without any further support.
raelgc/scudcloud#628
It doesn't have any active fork, so I think it should be removed from the list.
Hi. Please consider to add jet-live library for non-intrusive hot c/c++ code reload approach for linux.
Thank you!
The screenshot of GNOME is outdated
Hi. I have done this : https://github.com/VoLuong/Awesome-Linux-Software .
I found that yours and mine repo have many parts in common :D Do you ever think about merging them? Not neccessarily under one repo, you can replace a lot of things with just 1 link to my repo though ;-?

In Advanced users distros section Gentoo and Slackware are missing, can you add them please?
