iris-installer's Issues

Iris installer fails on Linux

What happened?

Ran Iris-Installer.jar (2.0.3) on Fedora Linux 35, and no profile was added to the launcher. The following was outputted in the terminal when running the .jar:

Installing 1.18.2 with fabric 0.13.3 to launcher WIN32

Could not find launcher_profiles

Perhaps the linux client has a different folder structure than the windows client, and this is causing errors with the installer .jar?

Clarification of options in the official installer .jar

The installer jar available on irisshaders.net offers a tickbox to either install it as "standalone" or into an existing fabric installation.
However, the differences between standalone and fabric installation are not well communicated anywhere, and can likely lead to confusion as users attempt to load fabric mods on a standalone install.
From the user's perspective, the client is listed as "Modded", claims it is running Fabric, and is labeled "iris-fabric-loader" in the Minecraft launcher. All of these things would lead one to assume that it is running Fabric, and that it would behave as such.
From here, frustration can ensue as users attempt and fail to load other fabric mods and get nowhere, as the standalone loader does not support that.

I propose an installation section in the README, the github wiki, and/or irisshaders.net, in which the differences between installation options are explained further, as well as how one would go about installing iris+sodium as standard fabric mods in place of standalone.

I cannot install Iris on Ubuntu

Yesterday I downloaded Iris, when I went to install this error, it's stuck on this screen: "100%" "Installation succeeded!"
Captura de tela de 2021-11-11 17-07-22
Minecraft 1.17.1 file is 0 byte;

in the task manager:
Captura de tela de 2021-11-11 17-17-04

If you try to open it in minecraft, the profile appears, but it gives an error when launching, tried to install using openjdk jre 8, 11 and 16 resulting in the same problem.

i tried to install using this:
https://github.com/IrisShaders/Iris-Installer/releases/download/2.0.3/Iris-Installer-2.0.3.jar

Using the version that puts in the "mods" folder and installing the fabric, it works correctly.

Ubuntu 21.10
GTX 1050 Ti Nvidia Driv 495
Linux 5.14.0

Fabric Loader version needs to be updated

sodium-fabric-0.5.8+mc1.20.4.jar JiJs two FAPI modules that require Fabric Loader to be updated:
fabric-rendering-fluids-v1-3.0.33+78d798af4f.jar depends on "fabricloader": ">=0.15.1"
fabric-rendering-data-attachment-v1-0.3.42+73761d2e4f.jar depends on "fabricloader": ">=0.15.1",

Iris Installer only installs Fabric Loader 0.14.24.

When you run the Iris Installer (set to the defaults) and then run the created instance, it results in a crash due to this unmet dependency.

See the following message:

UX: Direct the user to manual installation methods when the installer fails

Sometimes, there are intermittent issues with the services that the Iris installer relies on, or firewall issues, or any number of other difficult-to-pinpoint problems. When the installer fails, users don't realize that it isn't the only way to install the mod, and falsely believe that they don't have another way to install Iris. We should direct users to https://github.com/IrisShaders/Iris/blob/1.18.2/docs/guide.md#manual-installation in error messages so that they can still have a clear way to use the mod.

FEATURE REQUEST: Mark as executable

I'm not sure whether this is possible, but it would be nice if the installer jar were automatically marked as executable so you don't need to change permissions first.

Installer places version files in the wrong directory

What happened?

I have minecraft installed on another drive, and the automatic installer still copies version files to the default directory. Everything else copies correctly, and folders such as \iris-reserved and \shaderpacks are still created, it just doesn't put the version files in the right place.

Custom Install Dir not respected

I use Fedora 34 Linux and have minecraft installed via Flatpak, so my Minecraft is installed at /var/home/tomwagner/.var/app/com.mojang.Minecraft/data/minecraft.

When using the installer, I provide this path as a custom Install Path, but the installation fails, with this output on the terminal:

Launching installer...
Launched!
Using custom loader
Installing 1.17 with fabric 0.11.5
Could not find launcher_profiles

No changed happen in the provided folder, but the new Iris version appears at /var/home/tomwagner/.minecraft/versions, which is not where my minecraft folder is at.
