First, thanks for your work on this. I spent a couple of days fighting with my wife's identical 9570 before finding your image, and so far, mine is running much better.
Suspend works if I sudo prime-select intel
. However, with prime-select nvidia
, the laptop hangs on resuming from suspend: I get a black screen with one log line:
[timestamp] rtc_cmos 00:01: Alarms can be up to one month in the future
There's also a row of pixels at the bottom of the screen that shows a repeated pattern of noise. I get a similar distortion in that row on a fresh boot, and that goes away less than a minute after login.
So far, I've made only cosmetic tweaks. Besides automatically updated packages, I have the configuration from the prepared ISO. Current kernel is 4.17.9. The wiki suggests a "Force S3" option in the BIOS, but I don't have that option available. Also possibly relevant: I missed the chance to auto-install the new MOK after the first reboot, and haven't yet figured out how to repeat that process. So I'm still running in insecure mode.
dell-xps-9570-ubuntu-respin/build.sh
Line 18 in 63667a8
build.sh tries to install:
"gstreamer1.0-vaapiintel-microcode"
Missing space after gstreamer1.0-vaapi
It would be nice to provide bumblebee/primus support in this spin, by e.g. following this:
https://float-middle.com/ubuntu-18-04-steam-and-nvidia-390/
so that you can run software using primusrun
or optirun
.
As stated in the title, my fan speeds doesn't go above 3200 rpm (when connected to AC at least) even though the laptop is reaching 97 degrees celcius. Is there a setting I can change anywhere or would I need to utilise i8kutils? I've tried it in the past but it doesn't really work that well for me.
Thanks
Hi,
prime-select intel command is not working.
I get this message when I try to launch it:
Info: selecting the intel profile
Error: the installed packages do not support PRIME
Anyone got this? Any solution?
Thanks
Hi Jack,
I've tried using your respin a couple of times now but it leaves me in the same position. I had initially installed 18.04 manually and got it working with a few tweaks but the latest updates on the ubuntu repo's break the build - instability especially on suspend.
It seems the only current way to get it working would be to hold back some packages/updates, after figuring out which was causing the issues.
Any advice other than wait for this issues to be fixed in the ubuntu repos?
Thank you,
P.
I have full disk encryption. I had everything working from about the beginning of August but thought I'd rerun respin to get new work.
Now I can't boot. Instead of showing the screen with the prompt for the disk password, it shows a new Ubuntu screen and then ends up with an prompt to unlock the disk. But entering my password into that prompt doesn't work.
I tried to boot into an older kernel but same problem.
Help!
I just received an xps 15 and I've been trying to install your respin. No matter what I do, I can't get it to boot up, even after acpi= off, nomodeset, etc. I updated the BIOS to 1.6 and got the latest Nvidia driver on the windows side. I'm still have issues with NVMR - it constantly tries to probe the GPU and fails on a loop. Any suggestions?
I ran xps-tweaks.sh
and I noticed that after the nvidia driver was installed and prime-select
set to intel
the nouveau driver was still loaded. I was also getting a much higher idle power usage than before I installed the nvidia driver (~15W vs a previous ~6W as measured by powertop). I believe that even though the laptop is using the intel on board graphics, the nouveau driver must be doing something with the dGPU.
To confirm, with intel
selected check:
lsmod | grep nouveau
From reading this, I found that if I run the following and then reboot, the nouveau driver is not loaded and my on battery idle power consumption dropped back to 6W.
systemctl disable nvidia-fallback
Consider adding this to the xps-tweaks.sh
script.
According to this running powertop --auto-tune along with tlp will cause issues. Powertop should not be enabled in systemctl
5530 is the same hardware as 9570 except maybe for the wifi card.
But I don't know whether there is an official Ubuntu image from Dell or all their patches are already in the stock distro or they found inspiration for some of the fixes in this repo ๐
Hi JackHack96,
First of all, thank you for doing this and uploading your stuff. It's awesome.
I'm trying to use your already respun ISO to install it in dual boot with windows 10. However, I can boot into live mode from a USB but the installer is not present. Any idea what could be going wrong? Could you maybe post some steps what exactly you did to install? Did you have to change your RAID settings, etc...?
First of all thanks for this amazing work!
Now the question: is there a way to enable 4k monitor refresh rate to be higher than 30Hz via HDMI?
It works in Windows so not a hardware issue with cable or screen. I have tried setting it up while using Intel or Nvidia but no luck.
Thank you!
Firstly, thanks for your re-spin. I have been waiting since I got my new laptop to put Ubuntu on it so kudos.
Everything seems to be working fine after boot, however I get some errors during. It hangs for 20+ secs and then Ubuntu login screen is displayed. Any suggestions on how to fix this or get the boot time to be more responsive?
I am getting an error on line 40 of build.sh
.
Error message:
./build.sh: line 40: -u: command not found
Hi @JackHack96!
Did you try the new Ubuntu 18.10? I have some issues running it. It is actually useless right now. If you give a try just let me know.
Hi,
After installing Ubuntu and switching between intel/nvidia modes, the boot to windows is broken.
Any idea how to keep things working together as Windows is unfortunately required for some windows specific stuff (drivers).
Regards
Hello !
I'm trying your respin image but after installation, ubuntu seems to boot correctly then I just have a black screen and fans are just going up then down..etc...
I had the same issue when I tried to boot on the live ubuntu...
I don't really know what to do now :D
When I am on the black screen state, I can open virtual console crtl + alt + f5
then I see repeating errors (I had to make a video and make a printscreen :) ): Image
right now I don't have sleeping/hibernating on lid-close. :-
I don't really want to re-install everything again. :-)
Hi,
After I suspend, I can't control (and sometimes see) the mouse cursor. Fortunately, because it's a touchscreen, I can still do stuff.
Any idea on how to fix this?
Thanks!
Using this ISO I cannot get multi-display to work normally..
I get all kinds of issues like:
I'm probably forgetting 90% of what I've tried but I'm mostly curious who else encounters these problems on this system. This is holding me back from using this 9570 in Linux primarily and professionally and basically stuck with the bloated Windows (which is upgraded to pro at least)
I don't know why your script is installing msttcorefonts or why they would be required to make the drivers for a Dell work, but whatever mirror you used for the files is not working so every time I run install script, it spends 10 mins trying to download them, bombs out and they gives me an error.
Hi to all reading this,
I downloaded your already respun ISO and installed everything. Switched the prime-select query
to intel
(it was displaying nvidia
) but the idle watt usage in Powertop was still high (around ~12W-15W ish). I saw the installationg of bbswitch coming along in the xps-tweaks.sh script.
By default bbswitch is not initialized at boot, but you can do so via sudo modprobe bbswitch
and then it will create a file called /proc/acpi/bbswitch
with value 0000:01:00.0 ON
. Since the prime-select is now intel
, it should not use the nvidia driver and you should be able to turn it off with
sudo tee /proc/acpi/bbswitch <<<OFF
You can also create a modprobe file (sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/bbswitch.conf) and add
options bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=1
which will turn it off on load (the loading of the module) and turn it on on unload (the unloading of the module at computer off for example).
For some reason I cannot get bbswitch to load on computer start, but I don't mind using sudo modprobe bbswitch
on every boot.
My machine has an i7 8550H with 16GB of ram and the 1080p screen, non-touch.
On 50% brightness, idle watts are now around 7W
Hi, thanks for this. Besides some weird pixels at the bottom of the screen at login, this iso is working as expected :)
I have a question though, do you know what that is in the isorespin.sh file at the bottom after exit 0
?

[1] https://askubuntu.com/questions/1033179/ubuntu-18-04-installer-crashes-on-dell-xps-15-9560
My laptop randomly freezes when I am using the Nvidia card. I think only my display gets frozen and my keyboard and mouse are still inputting because I can still control my keyboard backlight when this happens.
I am switching to the Nvidia card via sudo prime-select nvidia
followed by rebooting my laptop. After rebooting my laptop will randomly freeze, sometimes after hours sometimes after minutes. It should be noted I have experienced this issue while gaming and also while web browsing (although I believe its more common while gaming).
I have tried switching my Nvidia driver to version 390, 396, and 410 and all have the same issue.
I have read that this is a common issue and might be related to the kernel version I am currently using (4.15.0-38-generic
) so if anyone is not experiencing this issue and is using a different version let me know and I can try switching to it.

Hi there,
I am a developer and I would like to setup a dual boot windows/ubuntu on my dell xps 9570.
So I am looking for the best way to install ubuntu and already read a lot of issues about this exercice. I was mainly going into this solution https://github.com/rcasero/doc/wiki/Ubuntu-linux-on-Dell-XPS-15-(9560) but then I found your fork about ubuntu respin.
I understood that you modify the ubuntu iso file to inject some tweaks but when my installation is done...how could I manage the new tweak/scripts that you will add to this repo ?
I don't really want to install again ubuntu each time you improved something.... ;)
thx for this repo ;)
Do you wish to disable SPECTRE/Meltdown patches for performance?
1) Yes
2) No
#? 2
awk: not an option: -i
I believe this fails this option.
First of all, thank you for your work! This has helped immensely on getting ubuntu to work on my dell xps 9570.
I am trying to run an encrypted ubuntu dual boot next to windows with bitlocker and secure boot enabled. Ubuntu works as expected. However everytime I boot into windows from grub it asks for the bitlocker recovery key.
This behaviour does not happen when secure boot is disabled.
The behaviour is also mentioned in the following posts:
Superuser 1
Superuser 2
I am actively searching for a solution and thus I was wondering if anybody else got this setup working on their dell xps 9570?
After running the xps-tweaks.sh script my fans are running apparently non-stop; is this a known issue?
Is there an "undo" version of the script?
I get this error when trying to run build.sh:
~/dell-xps-9570-ubuntu-respin$ ./build.sh ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso

Edit: I'm on 16.04 right now if that helps.
I tried to respin the official Ubuntu 18.04.1 ISO image several times but always got the error message xorriso : FAILURE : Given path does not exist on disk: -boot_image system_area='<path in my home folder>/dell-xps-9570-ubuntu-respin/isorespin/isohdpfx.bin'

Does anybody know why this error occurs and how it can be fixed?
When installing ubuntu with this respin, the end of the install fails when it's supposed to update the boot efi partition (which is currently Windows Boot Manager in my case, cause I use the respin with dual boot). The error it fails with is: Could not install grub-efi-amd64-signed to /target/
I used the direct download of the ISO you provided (on 09.11.2018).
With the official Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS ISO it did work, but obviously they didn't have the respin added goodies. So maybe it's just a matter of updating the ISO you provide, or just do a respin of the newest image.
Some small tips and tricks, some might be useful for other users:
Don't know if this is the best place for it
Use at your own risk
On windows there exist a dell power manager to set some hidden bios thermal settings, a similar tool exists for Linux.
$ sudo apt install smbios-utils
$ sudo smbios-thermal-ctl --set-thermal-mode balanced
smbios supported thermal modes: balanced, cool-bottom, quiet, performance
default = balanced
Arch link of the xps 13: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_13_(9370)#Thermal_Modes_.2F_Fan_profiles
For me it works on the dell xps 9570 as well.
Use on own risk
https://github.com/georgewhewell/undervolt
Set the mode of tlp to battery while on AC to see if this fixes it
$ sudo tlp bat
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/945/cpu-power-manager/
I don't know why, but the fan is constantly turning on for 5 seconds then turn off for 10 seconds.
Hi,
Thanks for the scripts and I still have a problems with fans. Periodically the cpu cores go a bit above 80 C so the fans start spinning at 5000 rpm . It happens every 5-10 mins... not sure why.. I also tried to run systemctl disable nvidia-fallback' but I got 'Failed to disable unit: Unit file nvidia-fallback.service does not exist.' How did you set the fans? Any help appreciated.
Hello !
Thanks for the work provided :)
I'm feeling so happy that I'm not the only guy who tried to use Linux on this laptop.
Unfortunately, I have an issue after installing Ubuntu with the respin usb key.
The installation worked pretty well, but when I reboot, I'm not able to join the grub. Each times I tried, I have the "dell support assist", which tries to scan my hardware.
I've done a full ubuntu installation (no dual boot and wiped the disk) and really can't understand why I'm not able to boot it after the installation is done. I've tried serveral methods (F12 boot, modified some Boot parameters in the BIOS, re-install the key...) with no success. May you could help me ?
Thanks !
I'm trying a second time with the same results. I fixed the BIOS so it booted properly (disable Secure Boot, enable Legacy ROM / external device. Now it's hanging. Any ideas? Or is this expected ... Thanks for all your help.
I am playing a relatively non-intensive browser game. Tribal Wars 2. Now I figured that if I play from intel it should help keep the laptop cooler and fan less noisy but nope it makes it run 100%. Yet when using Nvidia it is the same or even worse. Any idea how to control the Nvidia and the fans better so I would get a less noisy laptop?
Hi,
used the xps_tweaks script on my ubuntu install.
(which did a kernel update today i think, which i would have installed anyways, from 4.15.0-34 to 4.15.0-36)

i think it has to do with the removal of this: rm -f /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/*
Hey,
Looking for help here since it seems I'm not clever enough to understand why my setup isn't working. Maybe it's something easy, maybe I just need to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
I'm having trouble getting the nvidia mode of prime-select to work properly. No games wants to even start when I'm in Nvidia mode, but they work on intel. Steam wont even start on nvidia, it keeps telling me that "gfxChooseVisual failed".
Other than a bit of theming and setup in terms of shell profiles my system basically is a clean slate from the respin. I'm on the base version of the XPS 9570.

I dont think the downloadable ready yo use ISO is up to date (the details on link show it was last updated Sep 27). Can we replace it with a newer version? Also we should state in the README.md when google drive iso was last updated.

Any idea?
Best,

I used your script to create a new iso and installed it on my xps 9570 today. In the live session I first updated ubiquity to 18.04.3 (see #2 ) and continued installation from there. Everything seems fine.
The system uses the intel gpu, power usage is quite low (7-8W) as expected.
However, trying to switch to the nvidia card with sudo prime-select nvidia
tells me that nvidia profile is already in use, even when I see no proof of that (no high power use, system information shows Intel in the graphics column, etc.)
When I try to switch to Intel with sudo prime-select intel
it tells me that the currently installed drivers do not support prime.
Any idea what went wrong?
