obsidian-sanctum's Introduction

Sanctum 1.0 for Obsidian 0.16

Disclaimer for Sanctum Users

  • The sidenote syntax has changed (they are now callouts. Example: >[!aside|left] will give a left aligned callout. If you want to make it go further left, you can add up to 5 + next to the left information (for example: >[!aside|left +++++] will push the sidenote to the margin, so it doesn't mess with text);
  • Images work similarly to asides, but they also get a - syntax, as well as sizing options (-xs, -s, -m, -l(regular size), -xl, xxl, as well as a center/centre option;
  • Custom checkboxes have been expanded: *,a,f,S,-,>,<,l,B,X,n,p,c,w,b,I,!,?,i,/,u,d,F,r,m,M,L,t,T,P. They should mostly match the one's in Primary;
  • there are TONS of new style settings options, and more to come;
  • Work on the UI is at its beginning stages. The theme has been completely rewritten from scratch (no exaggeration there), so expect regular changes in the foreseeable future!

Design Principles

Intentional

  • This theme was made with the intent of clarifying Obsidian's UI, reducing the unnecessary clutter and keeping what's essential for an enjoyable and intuitive experience;
  • Greyscale palette is the same both for light as well as dark theme;
  • Colour is also used for contrast when hovering and activating elements.

Consistent

  • Every element is styled according to a predetermined grid, scale, animations (based on IBM's Carbon Design System) and colours - this conveys consistency throughout the theme;
  • The theme was created with the intention of using only one workhorse font family, used everywhere, but styled differently. Thus the theme comes with only 1 font family - IBM Plex
  • Offer a similar enjoyable experience, independently of screen size or device.

Clean

  • Use of calming colours, only used either to convey importance, or in the note file itself;
  • The background colour is the same in every element, to reduce visual noise and give a more calming atmosphere;
  • Elements are related to each other using the rules of visual gestalt. This means that they're grouped by proximity, in a common region or as a focal point.

obsidian-sanctum's Issues

[IDEA/REQUEST] : Make default bold font more distinguished.

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
It's hard to distinguish between bold font and normal font in dark mode. It will be great if the default bold font can be made more bold so that it can be clearly seen as bold

Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.
It will be great if the default bold font can be made more bold so that it can be clearly seen as bold

Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.
We can change the font in the style settings as an alternative.

Additional context
Add any other context or screenshots about the feature request here.

It's a low-priority request.

[BUG] CTRL+Scroll does not change font size in Edit mode

Describe the bug
Not sure is this was intentional, but the CTRL+Scroll does not seem to change the font size in Edit mode.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior (this is an example):

  1. Open notes side by side with preview and edit modes.
  2. Press CTRL and Scroll
  3. See error

OR

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance
  2. Move the Font size slider
  3. See error

Expected behavior
The Editor font size should change like the preview view.

Changing the variable unit in this line to "em" units changes the problem though.

Style issues on the new theme manager(0.12.19+)

Just upgraded to v0.12.19 and found that sanctum theme has some style issues (background, hover, border ?) on the new theme manager, please see the image below:

Sanctum:

截屏2021-10-20 07 15 18

Default:
截屏2021-10-20 07 18 44

By the way, Sanctum theme is the most comfortable theme I've ever used on Obsidian, clean and elegant. Thank you very much !

Aside padding

Something is hinky with the aside padding. It's not a huge deal but I thought you'd want to know.

image

[BUG] Fold heading & indent

Editor Setting > "Fold heading" & "Fold indent"

  • Folding doesn't work unless you activate "Fold indent" as well
  • Arrows that allow folding don't align with headings and indents (usually a few lines above the actual heading)

image

Issue with styling citation "[@cite]" and ":" character

Great theme!

Sometimes I have a small problem with styling of citations:
I have specific fragment:

- From [@botcharova2014ModellingAnalysisAmplitude]:
	- Assesing the presence of LRTC in the amplitude envelope of EEG and EMG

It will render like that:
image
When I put the space after the citation and before ":"

- From [@botcharova2014ModellingAnalysisAmplitude] :
	- Assesing the presence of LRTC in the amplitude envelope of EEG and EMG

Its renders normally
image

Scroll bar

In version 0.2 On hover it covers the entire vertical canal, as described in my personal message.

And the scroll bar in the file explorer is gone.

Scroll bars “2.0”

I am confused: I had to close Obsidian, and after relaunching the scroll bars were gone, in the notes, file explorer, Settings modal ……
I am using 0.2.1

NTH with Kanban plugin

Hey 👋 I've just tested your theme with the kanban plugin and it will be nice to have these 2 features:

  • Scroll when drag and drop a card.
  • Add card button fixed at the bottom of the column.

Like Minimal theme:

issue-15-1.mp4

Also, I think something needs to be improved in your theme because the drag and drop works a little strange:

issue-15-2.mp4

Formula-color in Darkmode is hard to read

Hello. I realy enjoy your theme. But there is one litlle thing..

The colors of the formulas are very hard to read for me in darkmode, specially in the selected line. Maybe it is a color blindness problem and not everyone is affected. For example, for me this ist impossible to read:

Greenshot 2021-10-27 10 29 17

One workaround would be to leave the font in its normal text color.

I would be very happy about a solution!

Feature Requests: Some small stylesettings Additions

I am coming to sanctum as my base theme from yin and yang, and it's great so far! But I miss a couple of things from Y&Y: the ability to set header colors in the style settings, which looks like this:

  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-1@@light": "#FB4934",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-1@@dark": "#FB4934",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-1@@light": "#FB4934",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-1@@dark": "#FB4934",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-2@@light": "#FABD2F",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-2@@dark": "#FABD2F",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-2@@light": "#FABD2F",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-2@@dark": "#FABD2F",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-3@@light": "#B8BB26",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-3@@dark": "#B8BB26",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-3@@light": "#B8BB26",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-3@@dark": "#B8BB26",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-4@@light": "#8EC07C",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-4@@dark": "#8EC07C",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-4@@light": "#8EC07C",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-4@@dark": "#8EC07C",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-5@@light": "#83A598",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-5@@dark": "#83A598",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-5@@light": "#83A598",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-5@@dark": "#83A598",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-6@@light": "#D3869B",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-pre-6@@dark": "#D3869B",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-6@@light": "#D3869B",
  "Yin and Yang@@sphd-ed-6@@dark": "#D3869B",

I also miss the ability to have different heading fonts in preview/edit mode if that could be added too :)

Feature request: progress bar when checking for plug-in updates

When one opens the Settings > Community plug-ins, there is a button to check if any of the plug-ins have an update. When you click on the button, nothing happens for a bit until you see the pop-up in the top right corner telling you there are or there not any updates.

Waiting for that pop-up is a bit strange, as if nothing is happening. A kind of progress bar would be useful. The GIF shows what I mean; unfortunately I missed showing that final popup in, but you get the gist.

Expected behavior

[BUG] Small conflicting with Outliner's fold

Describe the bug
The folded bullet's ... is not placed right:

  • In Edit mode, it is too close to the text (see the picture)
  • In Preview mode, it just creates a separate line with 3 dots. (see second picture, also a comparison for header's folding which is okay).

To Reproduce

  • I use the Outliner plugin a lot. In this plug-in, I do not use the setting "Improve the style of your lists" - which interferes with the CSS more.
  • Just create a bullet point and some sub-level bullet point, then fold up.
  • I think this simply some problem with handling the space when the bullet is fold.

Expected behavior
The three dots will be spaced out like in Preview for Headers fold.

[BUG]

Describe the bug

Fantasy Calendar's "today" CSS class got overridden.

Expected behavior

Here's what it looks like on a different theme:
image

On Sanctum there's no indicator of what "today" is, just the "active" day.

Additional context

This makes it hard for me to keep track of what day it is 😅

Remove file name truncation

Excellent theme, but I find myself constantly wrestling with the truncation of titles in the title bar. I use phrases as titles, some of which can be quite long, and this is a constant source of frustration when trying to rename the file because the phrase is cut off and it doesn't show me what I'm editing.

For example, I may have a title like this:

Define desired outcomes and target dates instead of using casual handoffs, especially in remote work

But it appears visually as:

image

Which in theory is fine, except that when I place the cursor in the title bar and move to the end of the title it appears like this:

image

I can edit/delete within that blank space but can't see the text I'm changing or typing.

What is the CSS rule used to perform this so I can create a snippet that will counteract it? It's unbelievably frustrating and introduces so much friction that I'm considering switching back away from the theme, which is otherwise excellent.

[BUG] Horizontal rules sometimes incorrectly render in new WYSIWYG "live preview" beta

Describe the bug
When enabling the new "live preview" WYSIWYG mode, adding a horizontal rule --- to a note sometimes causes the rendered line to appear on top of all content vertically centered on the pane and the full width of the pane. See images below.

This does not always happen in every note.

To Reproduce
Unclear. Enter --- rule in a note. Some cases the behavior appears, others it does not.

Expected behavior
The rules appear in their expected position on the note.

[IDEA/REQUEST] Tables Ignore Readable Line Width

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

I'm always frustrated when I go to look at a dataview table and everything is scrunched because of readable line width, because I have to go turn off readable line width, which doesn't have a toggle, plus sometimes my dataview tables are in files that have text that I would like to still be a readable line width.

Describe the solution you'd like

It would be cool if Sanctum automatically made tables go beyond the max width.

Describe alternatives you've considered

I've considered asking for a hotkey for this, but for reasons stated above this is only a partial solution.

Additional context

My dataview tables usually look something like this:

image

[IDEA/REQUEST] Table format

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
It will be great if there is an option available in style settings to display vertical lines between columns. Also good to have some options for more prominent lines (Like cell colors etc..). Similar to what is in the Blue Topaz theme.

Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.

Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.

Strong Defaults for Heading Background Colors [IDEA/REQUEST]

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

The Style Settings defaults for heading colors are black/white but you have a much better sense of color cohesiveness than I do so I trust your judgment more than mine.

Describe the solution you'd like

Let Style Settings come up with defaults for the Font/Background colors

Describe alternatives you've considered

Continuing to use my snippet 😅

Additional context

This is not a high priority ask.

Minor layout issue in pinned commands UI

The "pin" icon to the left of pinned commands overlaps with the text.

Screen Shot 2021-10-21 at 19 51 21

It might be due to some other plugins/snippets I use; I'm afraid I don't have the time to check at the moment. I'm just posting it here in case others come across this and looking for a fix.

Thanks for the great theme!

Implement app icons for links

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Implementing app icons for links. When you add a link in a note, appending the app svg icon ::before the link can be very fancy and neat

Describe the solution you'd like
This is implemented in the ITS Theme and also in Spectrum theme. Making this a native part of the sanctum theme will be awesome.

[BUG] Spaced Repetition Plugin, Deck Dropdown not visible

Describe the bug
When using the Theme, the Dropdown button for Subdecks is not visible/clickable. Thus preventing me from expanding a Deck to it's subdecks.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior (this is an example):

  1. Install the Spaced Repetition Plugin (https://github.com/st3v3nmw/obsidian-spaced-repetition)
  2. Create a few flashcards, using nested Tags as Deck structure
  3. Open the Flashcard Review (Per clicking on the icon on the left or per command "Review flashcards from all notes")

[Suggestion] Change code block colour for dark themes

The current --color-pink-500 code colour does not have enough contrast when dark mode is used. I changed it to --color-orange-500 (which works well for me) but I'm not sure how to change it depending on whether dark or light mode is selected (as I suspect that --color-orange-500 may be too light for light mode).

Highlight the pane in focus

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

If more than one pane is open, you can't tell which one has the focus. This means an extra click to the pane before any task.

Describe the solution you'd like

A format change to the title of the file when in focus, such as bold formatting or background colour change.

Feature Request: Adjustable Headers' Size

First of all, I want to thank you for making such a fantastic theme.
That would be great if I could adjust the size of the headers, for they look too big for me.
Thanks!

[IDEA/REQUEST] Suggestions for optimising default iA Writer fonts

Heya—this one should be pretty quick but I didn't have the time to write up a PR. 3 things you could fix:

  1. Right now you're loading the iA Writer fonts into the theme as format('truetype'), which is less space-efficient (about 3x). You can convert the variable fonts to format('woff2-variations') and save a good 100kb or so per font.
  2. I don't think you're loading the fonts correctly to use the bold font weight (at least, I copied your code into a snippet on my iPad and it didn't work right). Since they're variable fonts, you need to explicitly set format('woff2-variations') (if you're fixing the first problem) at the end of each font and specify a range for the font-weight (ex. font-weight: 400 700 for the iA Writer fonts). This will get bold to work while keeping space requirements low.
  3. You're technically supposed to include the license for the iA fonts when you redistribute them ;)

It should be easy to fix; I went to the trouble of doing both of these steps myself for my personal theme, and I uploaded them at this gist. Probably a copy-paste job :)

Calendar extension won't open new note [BUG]

Describe the bug
Using the "standard" calendar plugin, clicking on a date does not produce a new daily note. This works perfectly well in other themes

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior (this is an example):

  1. Go to the main page with the calendar displayed in the right sidebar
  2. Click on today's date (or any other) in the calendar

Expected behavior
A new daily note should open, or a dialogue asking if you mean to open it should appear (this is settings dependent)

** Actual behaviour**
Nothing happens at all.

Version [Desktop or Mobile]:
