Hey, I haven't ever tested the tar example in IE8 so it's normal that it crashes because Array.prototype.map isn't defined. Feel free to submit a pull request to either add Array.protoype.map polyfill or rewrite the code such that it doesn't use map.
As for 'dataview' being missing, woops. @RReverser made a diff to remove the jQuery support from jDataView.js here: 26ad259 but he didn't add it somewhere back.
Copy that piece of code at the end of jDataView.js or on any javascript file and it should work.
Thanks for the report :)

I have the same issue. I tried what vjeux suggested, and only managed to get IE9 working. IE7 and IE8 are not working.
I'm now trying to get the demo/untar_new.html working.
With the IE debugger IE7 and IE8 are running to the convertResponseBodyToText(...) method. Also the vbscript is executed, but the original "tar" method doesn't get a valid array. Any suggestions?

Got it back working in #37.
