Mail library doesn't do well maintaining the original value of headers

It sometimes strips out leading whitespace, replaces line-breaks with whitespace and subtly modifies date formats (mikel/mail#1075). This all in particular breaks the simple header canonicalization method... I may need to switch to a lower-level mail-parsing library.
