It may be necessary for developers to announce things to many users. For instance, reminding them of features like blocking and closing chats, or giving them safety tips.

Probably in the "gear" icon screen, which only says "logout" at the moment.

We need to have something that will poll for new messages, and display a counter for unread messages next to the message icon.

Currently there's no way for the technology to discern a malicious user from a sincere one. This may be impossible to prevent 100%, but there has to be a way to at least minimize the risk posed to sincere users.

Rating systems are problematic because there's no way to prevent malicious users from gaming the ratings, and ratings could also be used by governments to approximate how many people a particular user has housed.

The Proposal

Admin Users and Verification

It is plausible to have trusted admins all over the world that can verify users. Many people are involved in pro-immigrant and pro-refugee movements and would be able to personally vouch for a good number of users. Admin users would be hidden from the search algorithm, and they'd be advised not to house anyone. They could use an assortment of techniques to verify that a user is sincere, and not malicious. The search algorithm would favor verified users.

Unfortunately, this does nothing to protect against malicious "looking" users. I'm very open to ideas.
