Check out commit 5c16ce0, on branch 1.8.7fix. Does that work for you?
Even with this fix, though, I'm running into an "undefined method `set_encoding' for #<IO: [...]" error deep into the posix-spawn gem. It might be specific to my machine. I'll check on another machine later today.

I get the same error. No clear sense for how important it is to support 1.8.7. Probably most relevant for people on corp machines who can't install RVM.
