astrointeractives's Introduction

Hi there, I'm Juan Cabanela

I recently (Fall 2023) became a professor of Computer Science and Information Systems at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) after 24 years of being a professor of Physics and Astronomy at a variety of institutions include 17 years at MSUM.

My programming tends to be in the Python programming language (often using Jupyter notebooks) although I have quite a bit of experience with C++, C, Perl, and Bash shell (if you want to call that programming).

  • 🔭 I’m currently working on the stellarphot package with Matt Craig. It is a Python package designed to streamline the process of wide-field stellar photometry. It is specifically aimed at variable star and exoplanet observations.
  • 👨‍🏫 I previously worked on Astronomy Interactives, which were a set of Jupyter notebooks that were used in introductory astronomy classes to illustrate astronomical ideas.
  • 😄 Pronouns: He/Him
  • 🗺 Location: Moorhead, MN (primarily)

astrointeractives's Issues

Center of Mass: Make axes more visible

Is it possible to make the axes more visible so that it is clear where the center of mass is? Thicker links are not generally supported, so possibly use other shape?

Display issue in Chrome in HR Diagrams interactive

When using the slider to control the distance range displayed in the first Interactive figure, it appears the distance range (which is part of the widget slider control display) does NOT display when viewed in Google Chrome on Mac, but does display in Safari. Not sure why...

Binary Star sim view rotates when changing major axis longitude

I noticed that in the binary star sim, when the inclination is non-zero and the user changes the major axis longitude, there is slight rotation in the field of view. If the user then changes inclination, this goes away, but it is very odd, since the last bit called in property_change() function is a inclination_change() call. Would like to find a workaround.

HR Diagram Simulation: Clearer Distance Slider control

Consider replacing the distance range slider (with confusing ‘autoupdating’ of range to keep it at 100) to either a single slider or unbounded…

Also consider changing the icons labelling the stars to be more visible...

Center of Mass: Change to make appearance more consistent with Binary Stars

Make the following changes to make the appearance more consistent with the Binary Stars Sim:

  • View window could be smaller to allow it to work on smaller browser windows.
  • Change sliders to take up less vertical space (a la binary stars)
  • Change Phase Angle slider to not show numbers (a la binary stars)
