Hi Dwayne! Thanks for the bug report.
To be frank, I'm not a distutils fan, so I'd prefer to avoid it if I can.
It's true that mwic is written in Python, but it should be just an implementation detail most of the time.

Would it be ok for you if packages (pip, deb, rpm etc) are provided by third parties?

@sebix: I encourage third parties to make packages for Linux distros.
Third party "packaging" for pip would be somewhat unusual (although not unprecedented), but I don't mind either.

@tomviner: You can use mwic straight from unpacked tarball or from VCS.
Or if you want it installed globally, you can run make install as root.
I thought it's pretty obvious, but I guess documenting it won't hurt. :)

Adding a README with explicit install/usage instructions would be great, especially if not pip installable.
