According to the JEDEC document (https://www.jedec.org/standards-documents/docs/263f), the bottom (thermal) pad has the highest pin number. For example TO-263.kicad_mod is described as variation AA and has pins 1-4 (4 being the bottom pad).

Can I simply fix the footprint and send a pull request or is there a reason for the different numbering?

A footprint for SSOP-28 seems to be missing.
Package dimensions can be found here, and a 3D model is already included within kicad-libs. It's called SMD_Packages.3dshapes/SSOP-28.wrl.

Please add the package.

You guys have done a wonderful job brining KiCAD packages to autoupdate from GIT. I'm going to add a few WSON packages so that my generated packages aren't completely single-use (hopefully, I understood the package specifications correctly).

One question though, how would I specify the pin naming for a pad on the bottom of a package?

Many footprints are now included in more specialized packages, especially after the work of @michal777. The duplicates have to be removed from here. Eventually, this library will completely disappear.

Would the DF20 connectors from hirose belong in this .pretty or the connectors .pretty?

Also, I'm updating a bunch of the packages by text-editor. Is this okay with you guys?

Hello SMD_Packages library developers,
I am using Kicad build 2014-01-01 BZR 4600.
CvPcb shows error:
Errors were encountered loading footprints
IO_ERROR: Layer 'F.CrtYd' in file ...
When I open PcbNew I cannot find F.CrtYd in my layer settings. Thus the error message seems to make some sense to me.
The library always worked fine until two weeks ago. A couple of other github.com/KiCad libraries are affected, too. Are there any major changes that have been made, resulting in incompatibilities of the library with older Kicad versions like mine?
