try's Introduction

Try

Try is a package that allows you to try out Emacs packages without installing them. If you pass a URL to a plain text .el-file it evaluates the content, without storing the file.

Packages from ELPA will be stored in a temporary directory by default.

Installation

You can install Try using elpa.

It's available on melpa:

M-x package-install try

Usage

To try out a package you can run

M-x try RET some-package

Or if you want to try out some package from the web, just paste in the URL

M-x try RET https://url.com/to/some/file.el

Example

If you for instance have melpa in your package-archives you can try multiple cursors by running:

M-x try RET multiple-cursors RET

If you on the other hand want to test out a single .el-file from somewhere you can simply insert an URL. Trying out Leuven-theme can be done by running:

M-x try RET https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fniessen/emacs-leuven-theme/master/leuven-theme.el RET

Unfortunately, you won't be able to try Try with M-x try RET try .

try's Issues

Name change?

Hi there,

I just discovered this package by accident. I'm looking forward to trying it... ;) Seriously though, it reminds me of some shell scripts I wrote to do the same thing for Debian packages. Too often I'd install a package to try it out, then forget about it before I decided, and it would sit there taking up space and slowing down dpkg.

Anyway, I was wondering if you would consider changing the name to something like try-package or package-try. It would be far more descriptive and more likely for users to discover it and remember it. try by itself is so ambiguous... :)

Thanks.

Clean up the try* directory in /tmp

I was wondering why my /tmp/ is polluted with so many try* directories--turns out that every time I start a new instance of Emacs, it creates a try* directory. When Emacs is closed, the directory remains. The directory should be removed if not needed.

package-selected-packages

Starting with Emacs 25.1 a custom list 'package-selected-packages' is automatically maintained in init.el whenever you install a package. Testing packages with 'Try' keeps adding to this list even though the packages are not permanently installed on the system. There are different opinions whether 'package-selected-packages' is a good thing or not, but regardless it seems wrong to have it fill up with not-installed packages.
