SimpleFSM

Arduino/ESP library to simplify setting up and running a state machine.

Description

This library allows you to quickly setup a State Machine. Read here what a state machine is and why a state machine is neat for hardware projects.

It has been tested with Arduino, ESP8266 and ESP32 devices.

How To Use

  • You first need to define a set of states for your state machine
  • Then, define transitions (regular or timed) for these state
  • Pass the transitions to your state machine
  • Define an initial state
  • ...and add the run() function in your loop
  • See SimpleTransitions.ino for a basic example

Defining States

  • A finite state machine has a defined set of states
  • A state must have a name...
  • ...and can have callback functions for different events (when a state is entered, exited, or stays in a state)
  State(
    String name,

  • Most states will have the entry handler

  • The easiest way to define states is creating using an array, e.g. as shown in MixedTransitions.ino:

  • The inital state must of the state machine must be defined – either via the constructor or the setup() function or via the setInitialState() function

  • None, one, or multiple states can be defined as an end state via setAsFinal()

  • For the full State class definition see State.h

Transitions

  • This library offers two types of Transitions, regular and timed ones
  • All transitions must have a from and and a to state
  • Transitions can have a callback function for when the transition is executed, a name, and a guard condition
  • You can add both types to a state machine, see MixedTransitions.ino for an example
  • See Transitions.h for the class definitions of Transition and TimedTransition.
  • Note: Both classes are based of an abstract class which is not to be used in your code.

Regular Transitions

  Transition(

  • Regular transitions must have a a set of states and a trigger (ID):

  • Define the triggers for your state machine in an enum (and set the first enum value to 1, to be safe):

  • To call a trigger use the trigger()function:

Timed Transitions

  TimedTransition(
    State* from,

    int interval, 
    CallbackFunction on_run = NULL,

    GuardCondition guard = NULL
  );
  • Timed transitions are automatically executed after a certain amount of time has passed

  • The interval is defined in milliseconds:

Guard Conditions

  • Guard conditions are evaluated before a transition takes places

  • Only if the guard condition is true the transition will be executed

  • Both regular and timed transitions can have guard conditions

  • You define guard conditions as functions:

In-State Interval

  • States can have up to three events...
    • when they enter a state
    • while they are in a state
    • ...and when they leave the state
  State(String name, CallbackFunction on_enter, CallbackFunction on_state = NULL, CallbackFunction on_exit = NULL, bool is_final = false);
  • To define how frequent the on_state event is called, pass an interval (in ms) to the run() function in your main loop():

    void run(int interval = 1000, CallbackFunction tick_cb = NULL);
  • After this interval has passed the on_state function of the active state will be called (if it defined)

  • Also the tick_cbcallback function will be called (if defined) in the run() call

Helper functions

  • SimpleFSM provides a few functions to check on the state of the machine:

      State* getState() const;
      State* getPreviousState() const;
      bool isInState(State* state) const;
      int lastTransitionedAt() const;
      bool isFinished() const;
    

GraphViz Generation

  • Use the function getDotDefinition() to get your state machine definition in the GraphViz dot format

  • Here the output for the MixedTransitions.ino example:

  • Currently guard functions and end states are not shown in the graph

TimedTransition fires immediately.

I don't know if intended or not.
I would except that a TimedTransition only transitions the StateMachine if the time was spend entirely in given state.
The current implementation of the run Loop doesn't reset the start times of the transitions of the current state. This can lead to some effects where the timed transition fires immediately after the state is entered.

See MixedTransitions Example where red changes directly to green again after the button was pressed and the light turns back to red.

Behavior of TimedTransition undefined if "wrong" constructor is used

The constructors look like this:

So the first constructor is setting start to 0 whereas the second constructor doesn't.

start is being used by SimpleFSM in the run function like this:

Because start is not set in constructor, the value of start is arbitrary if the second constructor is being used. In my case the value is being -1 so start is not set to now in the for loop so now - timed[i].start is a huge value, if now is huge. In summary this leads to undefined behavior.

Workaround: Use the default constructor and then setup.
Long term solution: The second constructor should call the default constructor to set start to 0.

Simple example blows up esp32 huzzah feather

Hi, I modifed the code in the mixed transitions with browser example to add a 'yellow' light for fun. It seems to crash my Adafruit huzzah feather 100% of the time.

Set TimedTransition interval on setup or loop

Hello, I'm trying to set the TimedTransition interval on setup() or loop() functions without success.

This is because I load a config.json with some values and some transition interval are defined there, so I need to set the interval on those functions.

Any ideas on how to achieve this?

Can't compile examples for ESP32 target

Hi,
I tried compiling some examples for the ESP32 target and I always have errors that I don't `understand.
Whichever example I take I have the same errors.
If I change the target for a UNO the compiler only gives warning but no errors.

The destructor of SimpleFSM:

In many examples the stack is being used to store the transitions.

Improve GraphViz output by using named events

Including GraphViz/dot support is a very nifty idea, thanks!

The only issue I see is the lack of named events. The example at https://github.com/LennartHennigs/SimpleFSM/blob/master/README.md#graphviz-generation would be a lot more legible IMO if instead of "(ID = 1)" it said "press button". I understand this won't be possible out-of-the-box as events are defined by number rather than by name (usually through an enum).

However, what if we could pass something like an "event name array" to the SimpleFSM constructor (or through a setter)? Use a preprocessor macro to generate said array or hand-craft it.

Issue with timedTransitions using PlatformIO

I was looking for a FSM with best user interface, and I really like yours.
After some tests with your examples, by compiling with PlatformIO, I encountered an issue:

(To be clear: everything works well with Arduino-IDE! I don't understand this different behaviour with PlatformIO)

Usually, the code line fsm.add(timedTransitions, num_timed); lets crash my esp32:

Sometimes, the code is running fine until first hardware reset. After first reset, each program start ends up with same crash.

There is one exception about the crash: Adding timedTransitions after adding standard transitions works well. Working with standard transitions works always.

This crashs my esp32

  fsm.add(transitions, num_transitions);

This works well

  fsm.add(transitions, num_transitions);
  fsm.add(timedTransitions, num_timed);

Do you have any idea?

I am working with PlatformIO on different projects, usually it doesn't matter if compiling with PIO or Arduino-IDE. I want to use your FSM in my next project, therefore, I would like to know about this strange behaviour.

Listen to events/functions inside state

Hello, I'm trying to understand the docs and use this machine on a project. The project has different screens (states) and two buttons, the user can use buttons to do different things inside each screen. Sometimes the button only switch screens (state) but others I need to update some value each time the button is pressed inside that particular state.

I didn't find any examples with this type of logic or maybe I can't fully understand it.

Any ideas on what would be the best way to achieve this? Having different functions per state, that run (or listen) to buttons or external events (like websockets) while the state is activated?

I think I'm looking to have like different loops by state (kind of).

Compile error with Button2::CallbackFunction

Nice little library!

Today I started with the MixedTransitions.ino example and ran into the following compile error.

Cannot initialize a parameter of type 'Button2::CallbackFunction' (aka 'void (*)(Button2 &)') with an lvalue of type 'void (Button2)': type mismatch at 1st parameter ('Button2 &' vs 'Button2')

The problem is in this line:

void button_handler(Button2 btn) {

I have looked into the examples from Button2, e.g. SingleButton.ino, and I think this line should be

void button_handler(Button2& btn) {

The same issue is in SimpleTransitionWithButton.ino

Memory allocation problem

First of all, thank you for the great library! My problem is the following: I need to define pretty big FSMs on my ESP8266, in the order of 400-500 transitions give or take. To make things more manageable, I've added this function to the library:

This is pretty much the only way I can think of to make editing of big FSMs manageable, as it allows some degree of compositionality. My problem is that the ESP8866 doesn't seem to handle this well.

  • If I add just some transitions, then everything is fine.
  • If I add a bit more (say around a total of 30), it behaves fine but at some point it crashes. I've added some Serial.print to the trigger function and I noticed that the transition output is garbled (e.g. transition.to is cut or garbage altogethher).
  • If I keep adding transitions, the ESP eventually keeps crashing into a bootloop.

This makes me think that there is some problem with the memory management. I've tried to play with malloc and realloc a bit but being a total C++ noob I've ended up only wasting time. Any idea is appreciated!
