distill's Introduction

Distill

Remove impurities from your JSON objects with ease.

Usage

Distill is a simple library that helps you clean up dirty JSON objects. For instance, if you're providing an API. Some fields might be private (and shouldn't be exposed via the public API), while others could be arrays of data, and you only need to expose one of their attributes.

var distill = require('distill');
var data = {
  id: 1,
  title: 'Hello, World',
  dirty_field: 'This field should not be exposed.',
  authors: {
    id: 2,
    name: 'Joshua',
    email: '[email protected]'
  }
};

var output =
  distill(data)
    .field('id')
    .field('title')
    .embed('authors', 'id')
    .bottle();

// Output
{
  id: 1,
  title: 'Hello, World',
  authors: [
    { id: 2 }
  ]
}

With a simple, pleasurable DSL, Distill turns this previously frustrating task into a few lines of readable code. You can pass either a single object or array of objects into the distill method.

Contributing

Distill is far from finished. I built out the core idea, and left it at that. I need for it to do more (like standard configurations for serialization). You probably do too. I'm very open to pull requests, but here are a couple of suggestions that will help me maintain this module:

  1. Fork the repository, and do all of your work in a feature branch.

  2. Don't change the API without notifying me. Breaking changes are totally fine, but we should establish a sane upgrade path first.

  3. Document and test your changes.

  4. Send that pull request!
