They're incompatible. Update the server. Before you do that I'd advise to copy the lizard filesystem onto some nice shiny 16-GB hard disk or two.
Actually I'd advise doing that copy instead of upgrading lizard. Use BTRFS and set up some master/slave mirroring using btrfs send/receive. The reason is obvious if you look at this archive: Lizardfs is a dead project with no hope for bugfixes at this point.

I'd move to MooseFS that is available from native Debian repositories.

We ended up with using the package from Debian 9 on Debian 11 to connect on the old cluster. It can be mounted at least. We don't know if there are any other issues, but read/write performance is OK.
