It may be more useful to allow one rdfs:label per language.

Should be any XML language tag: http://www.w3.org/International/articles/language-tags/

  • although implementing this would require a way to specify language tag in your MS queries with labels.

I know that language labels are regularly used in the way you intend (single label per language) in SKOS with prefLabel, which is a subset of rdfs:label, but I am not sure what the OWL community has done with rdfs:label in terms of languages and uniqueness.

OK, interesting links. My feeling was that in the biomedical community labels (rdfs:label or obo:name) are pretty much unique and they are the property used for the human readable name of the class (eg: GO:0007596 being a class name with label 'blood coagulation'). They act as replacement for entity names which are themselves often an ID.

Most importantly, queries or class expressions formulated with the labels can be ambiguous if labels are not unique (like it is the case at the moment inside Protege). But this type of query, formulated with human understandable words, remains the best one for users. Therefore the idea of enforcing unique labels in Brain in order to avoid ambiguity problems later on. It's also possible to let the user pick the annotation property it wants (instead of rdfs:label), but I wanted to keep it simple and in-line with the current trends.

I don't know of any recommendation from the OWL community, but this approach is also compatible with XML tag languages and prefLabel for people willing to express more.
