Has been around since 1997 as a window manager for the GNUstep project (an open source clone of NEXTSTEP). There are GNU/Linux and BSD distributions which use Window Maker as their primary window manager, all (most?) other Linuces and BSDs at least ship a version of it - that should be enough exposure.
