mate-desktop.org's Introduction

mate-desktop
=============

mate-desktop contains the libmate-desktop library, the mate-about
program as well as some desktop-wide documents.

The libmate-desktop library provides API shared by several applications
on the desktop, but that cannot live in the platform for various
reasons. There is no API or ABI guarantee, although we are doing our
best to provide stability. Documentation for the API is available with
gtk-doc.

The mate-about program helps find which version of MATE is installed.

You may download updates to the package from:

   http://pub.mate-desktop.org/releases/

Installation
============

If you are not using a released version of mate-desktop (for example,
if you checked out the code from git), you first need to run
'./autogen.sh'.

How to report bugs
==================

Bugs should be reported to the MATE bug tracking system:

mate-desktop.org's Issues

Port Mate to QT.

Hello. I would like to know if the developers plan to port Mate from GTK+ to QT?

For correction french page

Hello,
Just a little orthographic correction in french page (https://mate-desktop.org/fr/):
"MATE est un fork de GNOME 2. Il fournit un environnement de bureau attractif et intuitif en se basant sur les métaphores traditionnelles pour GNU/Linux et d’autres systèmes d’exploitation similaires à Unix." (traditionnelles NOT traditionnels).

The wiki home page seems outdated

Under the development section (bottom of page) the stable version refers to the 2.8 and 2.8.x versions, while the unstable refers to the 2.10. They should respectively point to the 2.16 and 2.18 (or changelog page).

I try to open an account on the wiki to update the page but it seems newcomers cannot edit pages and find no information on how to contact an administrator to ask them to add me as an editor.

mate-desktop.org is not encrypted

Not a huge issue, I would think (because I don't think you're transmitting sensitive information), but it's 2015 and a lot of people would like to see every website encrypted.

"The MATE Team" linked e-mail address rejects for "Sender's SPF Policy Failure" when (valid) redirect SPF record in place

<martin@[...]> (expanded from <webmaster@[...]>): host mx.zoho.com[204.141.32.121] said: 550 5.7.23 Sender's SPF Policy Failure (in reply to RCPT TO command)

mail was attempted from e-mail address ending in @artlover.com, which has the following (valid) SPF record:
v=spf1 redirect=mail.com

Please fix. I've had to jump through hoop (#87) after hoop (#88) just to report the initial problem I found with the website (#86).

Link to Indonesian translation is incorrectly labelled

The link to the Indonesian translation is labeled "Inggris". I think this an error, like if the French link was "Anglais". Based on Wikipedia's label, it should be labelled "Bahasa Indonesia". (I'm not an Indonesian speaker, but my BA is in linguistics ;-)

distro: AOSC OS is shipping MATE

AOSC OS has been shipping MATE Desktop packages (newest version) and provides pre-configured system tarballs with MATE Desktop.

Our (temporary) homepage (next-gen page under construction) is at https://aosc.io.

Clearly state that there is no mailing list

I expected a mailing list for the MATE Desktop, so I spent a couple of minutes looking for it.

This page:

https://mate-desktop.org/community/

states:

"You don’t do email, we get that too."

This is probably a left-over from the times when there was a mailing list.

Could you remove that sentence?

It would be best to explicitly state that the project has no official mailing list, because many people, especially developers, automatically expect one and wonder where it could be.

Problem with keyboard layout

I've tried both Ubuntu-MATE 15.04 & 15.10; Fedora MATE 23: Debian MATE 8.2.

In ALL of these, I select italian IT keyboard while installing; after installation the keyboard layout is US while displaying IT layout in the tray area and in the Control Center.

To fix I have to add US layout, switch to "real" US, then switch back to IT.

Inconsistent licensing

I was going to contribute to this project, checked the license and everything seemed OK: it was a libre culture license according to README.md LICENSE.md. Then I see the website footer under a completely different license that doesn't allow commercial purposes. It doesn't make sense. Please clarify it.

I need to know the license so that I can know if I should contribute to this project or not. I prefer the Creative Commons license without commercial restriction if I can vote.

Package latest version of mate-control-center making marco depend on it

The current window manager is unsupported (v 1.82) #137

After upgrading to the latest version of marco, System -> Preferences - Windows gives the above error on Ubuntu-Mate 14.04 (installed from a minimal ISO w/ ubuntu-mate-core). It used to work before this.

This is fixed upstream. Please ask to debian/ubuntu MATE maintainers ( @sunweaver, @flexiondotorg ) to package latest version of mate-control-center, and make marco depending on it

Weather and cities

Hello,

Many cities are not repertoried (test for french cities).
If big cities are found, other (yet important) not. Howeve, towns easy to find for others desktop-environment (like Xfce, GNOME).

To read other remarks on the Net, it seems that even indicating geographical coordinates it does not work (but I don't try it).

Wrong Language

The text "Inggris" in (Also available in: ) should be "Bahasa Indonesia" and i posted a pull request on nikola and merged to master already (getnikola/nikola@c1b80be).

perhaps the website should pull latest version from Nikola?

Thanks

Wrong header links in Turkish

When the site language is Turkish, the links of the header bar are broken. For instance, the link pointing to the blog currently is http://mate-desktop.org/tr_tr/blog/ which returns a 404 whereas <http://mate-desktop.org/tr/blog/ works just fine.

Steps to reproduce:
Go to mate-desktop.org
Switch to Turkish language (i.e. go to http://mate-desktop.org/tr/ )
Try a link on the top header bar of the page (the links pointing to various pages such as the blog, installation, screenshots and so on). There's a total of 7 broken links.

https://wiki.mate-desktop.org/roadmap is outdated and no longer accurate.

https://wiki.mate-desktop.org/roadmap is outdated and no new information about the direction MATE is going in has been put up since February 2017. Since then MATE 1.18 has been released even though the road map indicates it is still being developed. Would it be possible for the road map to be updated and a general check of the entire website be done so people who are interested in the future of MATE can find the information easily?
Cheers
Michael.

mate-desktop.org is expired and parked

The project's main domain is expired and now parked, presumably sniped by a third-party.

I can recommend fosshost.org for managed domain hosting should it be required.

I can register some alternatives if required - other TLDs are available. I love MATE and am perfectly happy to fund that for a year (or ongoing as needed).

Workspaces

Hello,
A applet for the dashboard allows to change, add and remove the workspace.
But I don't see in control center the possibility to choice the numbers of workspaces. Maybe that it could be added?

Wrong statement for Slackware inclusion

Hi,

I want to propose to change this text:
MATE is available via unofficial repositories for the following Linux distributions, but inclusion in their official repositories is planned:
Slackware

into

MATE is available via unofficial repositories for the following Linux distributions:

Slackware

The reason is that because we (for now) don't have plan to push MATE to core Slackware packages. The decision is not made by us, but by Patrick Volkerding, Slackware author and maintainer.

Thanks

RFE: Closing Mate forum

Michael our last global forum admin have given up, because no one except me have ever given an answer on his PMs, since 3/4 of a year.
So the forum is unmaintained now.
Users can use distro forums.
@flexiondotorg @monsta @clefebvre
Let us close the forum in the next week except you guys will jump in and playing a forum Moderator.
I'm really tired about this one year old problem.

problem with RSS feed

The link nodes at https://mate-desktop.org/rss.xml aren't valid (e.g. <link>//mate-desktop.org/blog/2017-03-13-mate-1-18-released/</link>) and therefore don't work in many (most? all?) RSS clients. For example, the links to the articles aren't clickable in Firefox's feed preview interface. They also don't work in another feed reader I use. A full URL must be provided as a protocol-relative URL isn't valid in all contexts (such as a feed reader application which is itself served over neither http nor https). The feed validator at W3C also indicates the requirement for full URLs: https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmate-desktop.org%2Frss.xml

Could you please address this issue so that I may benefit from subscribing to your feed? Thanks :-)

Add screenshots for 1.20

The current one is from 1.14 and it is quite outdated. I would be happy to provide new screenshots.

Need fix blog-20170313-mate-1-18-released-md--master

There are same type of issues in this blog. This is due to the editing style of the author. He sometimes splits a sentence between plural lines. It might be caused by WordPress as adopted in the past blog. As a result, this style cause a trouble in translating for another language.

As a turnaround, I managed to do by putting "\n" once in a while. For example:

line 68: * NEWS: use consistent, project wide, markdown-like formatting
line 69: to make generating release announcements easier

FYI
I hardly saw a case like this by other contributors.

The French translation has disappeared

Recently the French translation of the website has disappeared. Would it be possible to restore it? If there was something wrong with it I can happily try to correct or update the translation.

potential CI+CD issues

As noted in #79 (comment)

Your CI+CD is acting autonomous, and this would be a problem if you wouldn't have a git to rollback:
live changes can occur just through open PR, they do not have to be merged, once the CI checks finish the content of the PR appears on the live website.

Is this a design problem of the CI / your way to use it or "just" some other issue?

It's not an issue of authority as long as you have git, but it seems not to be in git, which is a small problem.

Translate 'blog-20210808-mate-1-26-released-md in ja

The resource blog/20210808-mate-1-26-released.md (master) of the project MATE Desktop Website has been 100% translated in Japanese.
But I cannot find now no automatic pull-request here from Transifex.
Is there any systematic trouble inside?
Or it is just a normal behavior?

Search on mate-system-monitor

Hello,

The search on mate-system-monitor gives very few answers.
Queries indicate 0 search results.
Exemple: 0 for "mate" "caja"...

Same note for Debian and Fedora, with Mate 1.20 .

Website/translate/#ja/blog-20160922-mate-1-16-released-md--master is broken.

Ja translation is partly broken now. I look up the past history, and found out the real problem.
Title was changed in the past as follows:

Perhaps, you don't have to worry. I do not care much, because past translations are all stored in Transifex memories.
Please upload an original English source from the main repository. Thank you.

Looping pressed key on restore session's login screen

Ubuntu 18.04 (not Ubuntu MATE) with MATE desktop installed manually by APT: Login screen for restoring session often looping the first pressed key (when typing password; no release key signal being processed). So, the keyboard freezes completely (not even pressing the same key again solves) and there is no other possibility like CTRL+ALT+F1. Since I'm using a laptop, I can't try reconnecting the keyboard physically. The only remaining solution is holding the laptop on/off button until it forcibly turns off.
