What about using the <b> tag to swap the spans with? Used for a span of text offset from its surrounding content.

Saving bytes isn't really important here, it's more about a) best practices, and b) making sure the source is something people can learn from. I'd hesitate to use <b> for the latter reason.

(The problem with <b> is that it takes some explanation for people who haven't come across that particular usage before. <span>s are a lot more understandable for beginners.)

Add a garden.json file to each of the designs that specifies a version. Then, parse the version and use that to determine what variant of the markup to load and render. When browsers begin to support real CSS3 generated content like ::outside and ::after::after, it may be worthwhile to come up with a new version of the markup to reflect that.
