I've setup Bento as my New Tab page, using the "Custom New Tab Page" extension, but I was getting this error from firefox after setting openInNewTab: false
in config.js:
After a bit of fiddling, it seems like this feature must be enabled in the "Custom New Tab Page" extension preferences:
And indeed it fixes the issue!
May I submit a PR documenting this under "Usage" > ":heavy_plus_sign: As New Tab"?
Heyo :D
So I have been experimenting with Bento and I noticed a issue (Same issue as #32 ). I am using Windows 10 21H1 and have synchronized the time and tried and still not working, works in other browsers. Can you please explain what is wrong?
I use a browser called Librewolf which has a feature which sets the user's timezone to UTC automatically for privacy reasons. But is it possible to add some snippet of code in the website 'Bento' so that it keeps the right timezone instead of following the one given by the browser.
The actual time is 10 am but it is showing 4 am. Please help!!!
Hi, I think i found the code for the weather. But i dont know what does it mean? Can anyone explain to me? Thanks
When I open Bento, a white flash appears, i.e. the background starts white then fades to black. The image shows how the page looks for less than a moment when it first starts:
This is annoying especially late at night when a white flash can be disorienting. Is there a way to fix this or is this intended?
I really like Bento, but I don't always have good internet access. Is there a way to load the page faster? Like caching or make it offline?
It seems like the spacing and size of the buttons and lists are slightly wrong when set as my firefox homepage, compared to when set as new tab using the "Custom New Tab Page" addon. The new tab one is actually how it's supposed to look. I only changed some links in the config.js file, nothing else. I really have no idea what may cause this. I've tried using the default bento settings, reinstalling firefox, clearing cache etc.
I've added two screenshots to show what I mean. I'm using FIrefox 112.0.1 (64 Bit).
Hello, I was wondering how to get weather icons that i created to work in Bento. I try adding them in the same format as the others, setting the icon theme in config.js
to the folder name, and nothing works.
Is there something hardcoded (from what i found, the unknown weather icon is hardcoded in index.html
), or is Bento only limited to those four icon themes?
The time and date displayed on my homepage is different from my local time. The clock is 5 hours ahead, but is correct in terms of the minute. I'm not sure why this is happening

You can access Bento at: https://vanortton.github.io/Bento/index.html
where can we source the icons you are using? Is there a site we can goto to see other icons to use that match.
Thanks
While new weather data is being fetched, it shows your last data retrieved and stored in Local Storage.
Pull requests: #111
I know this project isn't really active anymore but as I was going through I noticed that it is pretty minimal and most can be desktop widgets. I think adding links to everyday apps such as twitter would be helpful.
I have gone through and made all of the changes you left inside the guide and changed the respective figures and names to match what I need but the the name still does not update from John Doe to my name. Also, I cannot seem to get the day/night cycle to work correctly although that is my secondary worry. My main issue has to do with my name and the greetings.
im sry but i just can't set it up im using firefox and i would like to get it as a new tab page
In greeting.js file, you have given the statement hour >= 23 and < 5. This statement will fail for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 since 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 cannot be >= 23 AND < 5. It will also fail for 23 itself since 23 is not less than 5. This straight away goes to the else statement. Correct me if I am wrong.
hello, i'm brazilian and i apologize in advance because i can't speak english so i'm using google translator,
one of the things I missed about Bento was the weather forecast in Portuguese so I looked in the api documentation for a way to solve this, and I ended up finding a solution to send the 'lang' parameter in the url with the language you want as a result, so i did this and add the parameter 'languge' in the config.js file and send it along with the api request.
Hello!
I tried many ways and failed, this is the only thing holding me back from a perfect workflow. If you could shine some insight, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot :D
Since feather icons is no longer mantained, maybe use the community fork of it lucide icons?
This may take a while but adding login pages to customize for the user. They could customize the apps and themes they want
It was pretty easy and straight forward to set this up in Linux Mint, however, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get this running via Docker on Windows. Due to Firefox synchronising add-ons and their setting, I am currently stuck with the nginx default page for my Windows installation. I tried a lot with Docker, but I cannot figure it out.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Firefox Dev edition showing UTC time where as time is UTC +5:30 additionally i tried #51 but no luck . I use better fox which might be a issue but did not find any sign .
It would be great to have this deployable as a docker container. I could even work on this.
If think this app can be really usefull to use if we can setup it as a browser extension.
No server, no online request to load the page.
Hello. First github post. Love the start page. I wanted to have a background image that dynamically changes each time the page is loaded. I added the code to my fork and was pleased with the results. Feel free to use it or not. Perhaps it detracts from the minimalist vibe.
I used unsplash to randomly select the images. It offers keyword search for multiple keywords and resolution options.
4k example --imgbg: url(https://source.unsplash.com/featured/3840x2160/?{night},{animal});
1080p example
--imgbg: url(https://source.unsplash.com/featured/1920x1080/?{night});
and then add one line into body to blur it
backdrop-filter: blur(10px);
**note to add: firefox doesn't natively support backdrop-filter and needs to be enabled in about:config.
every other browser does
Haven't moved any file only edited.
Even on a fresh install (with John Doe) greetings do not appear.
Chromium 88 snap version
Hi there!
I am in the process of editing my startpage and was testing out how I could create more than the six button links that are included in the code to no avail. Is there a way where I can add additional button links other than the six that are included?
Any assistance is highly appreciated and I thank you in advance!
I cannot change off of the light theme. Clicking on the toggle option doesn't work.
I've also tried replacing the CSS values for the light theme with the ones in the dark theme, hasn't worked.
How can I add more links and more columns?
I am using the list layout and it is very nice, but I would like to be able to create another column or two and to have more than just 4 links. Is this a planned feature? If not, could I get some pointers about how I could do this?
Also I have this issue (out of the box) where only the firstlistsContainer
or firstButtonsContainer
is displayed when the browser window gets narrow (not full screen). I would expect secondListsContainer
to be displayed below it and be revealed upon scrolling instead. Is this the intended behavior? If not, can this be enabled somehow?
I'm wondering if it's possible to remove the weather and time widgets. I'm just looking to have a page just just buttons.
If icon is not found on Lucide, search for them in assets/customicons/[name].svg folder.
On the previous version of bento, I was able to duplicate the css entry for .qlist__link to .qlist__greenlink, bluelink etc to allow me to have different colour highlight for the two lists.
.qlist__link {
text-decoration: none;
font-size: var(--fses);
color: var(--fg);
margin-top: 1px;
padding: 6px 12px;
border-radius: 5px;
font-weight: bold;
}
.qlist__link:hover {
background-color: var(--accent);
color: var(--fg);
}
.qlist__orangelink {
text-decoration: none;
font-size: var(--fses);
color: var(--fg);
margin-top: 1px;
padding: 6px 12px;
border-radius: 5px;
font-weight: bold;
}
.qlist__orangelink:hover {
background-color: #EF9A3E60;
color: var(--fg);
}
The new system appears to only allow you to edit the color for all items
I noticed some strange behaviour when resizing the window. The breakpoints were not displaying the text correctly.
See the screenshot for an example.
Probably not the best way of dealing with it but I addressed it by resizing the initial fonts (fsg and fsm) like this.
/* Fonts /
--fsg: 100px; / time and greeting /
--fsm: 70px; / month+date /
--fss: 30px; / greeting+weather*/
--fses: 18px; /* links */
Thanks for the project :)

I use your Simplerent fox userChrome and I love it. It's just elegant and nice. So I decided to use your Bento startpage. I have added a couple links and added the weather and it has been great so far. Just a question though. How do I open the links in the same tab? Your doc says that target="blank" opens the link in a new tab. I don't know html so I looked at how to open the link in the same tab, and it said that you have to put target="_self" instead. So I tried it and it still opens the links in a new tab.
