Thanks for your report. What looks suspicious to me is the clang-7: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation), since my expectation is that 'macOS Big Sur' uses clang 12. Do you have somewhere an old clang installed? does cc --version and ld --version return something suspicious?

Your question showed me the way! I had installed gcc via nix package manager, which masked Apple's clang binaries. Restoring the latter's visibility worked.
I wasn't aware that sticking with clang on macOS is the best approach. I will try again after installing clang12 from nixpkgs.
Anyway, this solves the issue. Sorry for wasting time and thank you for your help.
