COMPILED FROM:

This list of hosts is compiled from real server logs on my own servers where I run a number of very busy web sites.

This list originated from the list of bad referrers domain lists for:

NGINX ULTIMATE BAD BOT BLOCKER or Get the APACHE ULTIMATE BAD BOT BLOCKER

The list has now been separated from those projects as it contains certain domains which do not actually belong in a hosts file.

WHAT IS A HOSTS FILE?

A hosts file, named hosts (with no file extension), is a plain-text file used by all operating systems to map hostnames to IP addresses.

In most operating systems, the hosts file is preferential to DNS. Therefore if a domain name is resolved by the hosts file, the request never leaves your computer.

Having a smart hosts file goes a long way towards blocking malware, adware, ransomware, porn and other nuisance web sites.

A hosts file like this causes any lookups to any of the listed domains to resolve back to your localhost so it prevents any outgoing connections to the listed domains.

WHERE DO I PUT THIS ON MY COMPUTER?

To modify your current hosts file, look for it in the following places and modify it with a text editor.

Linux, Mac OS X, iOS, Android: /etc/hosts folder.

Windows Systems: %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts folder.

UNDERSTANDS PUNYCODE / IDN DOMAIN NAMES

A lot of lists out there put funny domains into their hosts file. Your hosts file and DNS will not understand this. This list uses converted domains which are in the correct DNS format to be understood by any operating system.

For instance The domain:

lifehacĸer.com (note the K)

actually translates to:

xn--lifehacer-1rb.com

You can do an nslookup on any operating system and it will resolve correctly.

nslookup xn--lifehacer-1rb.com

	origin = dns1.yandex.net
	mail addr = iskalko.yandex.ru
	serial = 2016120703
	refresh = 14400
	retry = 900
	expire = 1209600
	minimum = 14400
xn--lifehacer-1rb.com	mail exchanger = 10 mx.yandex.net.
Name:	xn--lifehacer-1rb.com
Address: 78.110.60.230
xn--lifehacer-1rb.com	nameserver = dns2.yandex.net.
xn--lifehacer-1rb.com	text = "v=spf1 redirect=_spf.yandex.net"
xn--lifehacer-1rb.com	nameserver = dns1.yandex.net.

Stop Bad Bot and Bad Referrers from gaining access to your web sites.

badd-boyz-hosts's Issues

False Positive - abc.xyz

abc.xyz is now a false positive - while this probably was a true positive before, Google has now bought this domain and runs it for Alphabet Inc, the new holding company of Google, Nest, et cetera.

False positive: fark.com

Looks like a recent update added fark.com which is... well, it's Fark. It's been around forever, I can't imagine they're resorting to referrer spamming. Thanks!

site5.com

This is a webhosting company and by blacklisting them you have broken DNS for anyone using the default DNS servers ate site5.com

Why is this blocked?

forodvd.com

Please check this domain.
forodvd.com
Wrongly blocked on your list.

False positive: doctissimo.fr

doctissimo.fr (and forum.doctissimo.fr) is a big French health-related site. I see no reason for it to be included.

False Positives / Incorrectly Blacklisted Domains ?

If you ever find any false positives or blacklisted domains that you believe should not be blacklisted on this blocker please list them separately as issues here explaining why they should not be on the blocker and they will be investigated and promptly removed if found to be valid removals.

Unfortunately this list started over a year ago which was originally based on a few other lists which did contain a few false positives. Most have been ironed out over the past few months thanks to issues noted on this and other repo's I run or contribute to.

The original list from where this began had a mere 200+ listings which now has grown into over 3800+ strong which has been built day by day through monitoring of my servers logs of 18 very busy web sites. So yes there may be a few remnants from the original list which do not belong here. I have spent into the thousands of hours building this blocker and maintaining this list.

It is NOT the intention of this blocker to block out valid domains and services and I maintain a very clean list which is also regularly tested for dead domains and expired domains which are also removed every now and again to keep the list clean and functional as it should be.

So if you find anything being blocked that you believe is unwarranted, kindly list it here under issues and the matter will be looked into and promptly attended to.

IP Addresses

Hi @mitchellkrogza Mitchell, I notice the repo now contains many direct IP addresses.

I'm curious about the source of these, and how this ultimately gets curated. I'm guessing these come from your logs?

[FIXED] Russian blog service is mistakenly banned

Not so long ago you were quick to exclude major Russian social network ok.ru from your hosts file.

Not it comes to Russian blog platform Liveinternet, which is mentioned here twice as liveinternet.ru and www.liveinternet.ru. It exists since 2003, its creator German Klimenko is the Kremlin’s official Internet adviser since January 2016. Respectable reference to reconsider, isn’t it?

The only reason of current ban I could think of is that Liveinternet (Russian alternative to Livejournal), displays ads for free users, but uses dedicated sub domain ad.liveinternet.ru for that purpose (like even Youtube does), which I do not ask to remove.

Correction

I’ve noticed you list the following websites as spam:

nibbler.silktide.com

And

silktide.com

I work at Silktide and I wanted to shed light on the company and what we do.

Nibbler is a website testing tool (free) that many people use to check their websites. It does spider a website, but only if requested. It is not automatic and does not randomly spider websites.

Silktide is our company name - the silktide.com domain is our company website. It is not a spam site nor does it do anything other than host our website and Nibbler on its own subdomain.

As a PiHole user myself, I have whitelisted both to prevent issues with accessing our own website but I felt it was incorrectly blacklisted and opened this issue.

fok.nl

fok.nl should not be listed, it is a Dutch news site.

Domain "news.ebc.net.tw"

This site is Taiwan's News Media "Eastern Broadcasting Co., Ltd."
Please unblock this site on hosts file, thank you.

maxthon.com

maxthon.com itself is Maxthon browser's site. you should block:

stat-c.maxthon.com
dcs.maxthon.com

instead.

bit.ly

Why is bit.ly blocked? As far as I know it's just a popular URL shortener, not malicious itself.

Thanks in advance.

Unblock adf.ly

adf.ly is a url shortener, blocking it will break all shortnered adf.ly links.

Whitelist domain [freshwallpapers.info] & [geckoandfly.com]

Hi,

I am using the "Unified hosts" from Steven Black which also includes one of your hosts "Mitchell Krog's - Badd Boyz Hosts".

A quick look and test seems there are many good sites that are on your block list. Not sure why they were blocked. Did you check if these sites are actually harmful?

Can you take a look at all your filters and remove the good ones from them? For now, please unblock the two in the title. I will continue to monitor and if more are found, I will have no other option but to completely remove this host itself. Thanks!
