web's Introduction

Synopsis

:- use_module(library(web), []).

?- web:get('http://www.ndrix.com/hello.txt', codes(Text)).
Text = `Hello from the Internet`.

?- web:get('http://httpbin.org/ip', json(Dict)).
Dict = _{origin: "66.119.58.231"}.

Description

This module helps you perform HTTP operations with as little code as possible. This includes:

  • basic HTTP requests
  • helpful SSL defaults
  • convert HTTP responses from common data formats
    • JSON
    • HTML5

For more complex needs, use http_open or http_client directly.

Installation

Using SWI-Prolog 7.1 or later:

?- pack_install(web).

This module uses semantic versioning.

web's Issues

Re-read original struct ideas

I originally took notes about this library in another document (preferring to keep all notes in this library). Read through that document again and create separate issues for anything that's not implemented yet.

Handle "Content-Encoding: gzip" responses

If the user has library(archive) installed, add Accept-Encoding: gzip to the outgoing request header. If the response comes back with Content-Encoding: gzip then automatically decode it along these lines:

use_module(library(archive)),
archive_open(HttpBodyStream,Archive,[format(raw)]),
archive_next_header(Archive,_),
archive_open_entry(Archive,Stream).

Be sure to perform necessary archive cleanup.

configurable request

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. The first argument of web:get/2 accepts a URL. In some sense, that argument represents the HTTP request. The second argument represents the HTTP response. What if we also accepted a list of options for the first argument:

  • url - specifies the request URL
  • auth(basic(User,Password)) - enables HTTP Basic authentication
  • header(Name,Value) - adds an HTTP request header
  • timeout - maximum time to wait for a response

Most of these are sugar for http_open/3 options so implementation should be fairly easy.
