ama's Introduction

Stand with Ukraine

Hi! I'm Volodymyr Agafonkin.

I'm a software engineer. I created Leaflet, the number one library for interactive web maps, and maintain 40+ other open source projects with a focus on algorithms, computational geometry and data visualization. I'm building the future of maps at Mapbox. Here are a few of my best tech articles: https://agafonkin.com

I'm a musician. I write songs, play guitar and sing in Obiymy Doschu. If you like beautiful, evocative rock music with lush string arrangements, check out our last album.

I'm a father to beautiful 9-year-old twin girls, I'm happily married and live in Kyiv, Ukraine. I love baking, photography, strength training, martial arts, reading sci-fi and fantasy, and exploring quiet parks. You can find tidbits of my life on X (Twitter), Instagram and Facebook.

ama's Issues

Wherein I start this off by asking about working remotely.

Hi Vlad,
I'm assuming you work for Mapbox from the Ukraine.

  • Do you work in your home or away from home?
  • Do you find it difficult to communicate with your co-workers from around the globe and different time zones?
  • Do you have a favorite projection?

Thanks for Leaflet. Big fan.

L.control.attribution

Hello Vladimir,

Thank you for offering your help here. I have built a MapBox application. I wanted to add a copyright prior to MapBox's copyright logo. I used your L.control.attribution as:

varName = L.control.attribution({prefix: 'some text'}).addTo(map);

I used FireFox inspector and found that 'some text' is a child of ->

from leaflet.css.

I have my own custom.css file and I tried to use it to override the class leaflet-control-attribution in leaflet.css but it is not working. Is this something from MapBox.css to prevent changes or from leaflet? Is there a solution to fix this? I just wanted to change the background of the parent div of the L.control.attribution DOM object.

Thanks in advance

Ahmad

Styling OSM-Based GeoJSON with MapBox GL JS

First of all thanks for all you great work in the web mapping business! Please let me know if I should rather post this on stackoverflow:

After reading https://www.mapbox.com/blog/introducing-geojson-vt/ I am wondering if it’s possible to use an OSM extract or custom OSM data converted to geoJSON with MapBox GL JS and use MapBox Streets styling or anything similar.

If that’s possible, what would be the prerequisites and neccessary steps to do this?

I’m still looking for a more elegant way to have a current OSM map along with historical maps created in JOSM. I currently have a workflow based on Tilemill, OSM2PSQL, hosted as Raster-mbtiles via a PHP-serverscript: http://maps.animaux.de/ (the first 2 baselayers 2014 + 1926 using a style based on OSM Bright/Pandonia)

Esri software

One of my favorite things about using Leaflet over Esri's Arcgis Javascript API is the simplicity of the code/not forcing me to use Dojo. This led me to wonder if your inspiration for a simple mapping api came from past experience using Esri's API/software (such as ArcMap)?

How do you learn?

I'm curious to hear how you continue to build upon your skill set... so:

How do you learn best (physical environment, resources, starting points, etc.)? In particular, if/when you hit road blocks, how do you get through them?
