mozilla-opennews's Introduction

Knight-Mozilla OpenNews

This is the current site for the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project.

Knight-Mozilla OpenNews is about building an ecosystem to help journalism thrive on the open web. It's about producing next-generation web solutions that solve real problems in news. It's about supporting communities of developers and journalists as they make, learn and invent together. And it's about deploying fellows—and code—into news organizations to collaborate and innovate in new ways.

This site is built using Jekyll.

mozilla-opennews's Issues

need team eyes/blessing on new opennews blurb

This is now at the top of the homepage, so I want to explicitly request a team review on it:

OpenNews is a joint project of Mozilla and the Knight Foundation dedicated to helping journalism thrive on the open web by supporting the international community of developers, designers, and data journalists in newsrooms.

Note: I'm using "joint project" instead of "partnership" because although the latter is accurate, it's a weird as the main noun defining OpenNews.

adding the new opennews blog feed to planet.opennews

when we launch the blog, there will be a feed for it available at: opennews.org/feed.xml

the actual feed for the site is pointing to planet, NOT to this feed.

My inclination is that we keep the feed in pointing to planet and we use this feed as a source for planet

so two questions here:

  1. do we keep the feed as planet and
  2. how do we add this feed to planet?

Our blurb got us through launch, but…

I am not in love with it. Here's the existing one, and I'll work on revisions this week:

OpenNews is a joint project of Mozilla and the Knight Foundation that helps journalism thrive on the open web by supporting the growing community of news developers, designers, and data-wranglers.

website is down or moved?

http://mozillaopennews.org seems to still be owned by Mozilla (according to whois), and there's a DNS record for it, but the site is down. Is http://opennews.org supposed to be the new location and it's just missing a redirect?

301-palooza

opening this issue to loop @jdotpz in. We need to collect a list of AALLLLLLL the pages that are changing location and ALLLLLLL the new pages that replace them.

JP, how would you like that information delivered?

titles are on top now?

@kissane I've noticed that you've moved titles to pages above images on some pages where that was not previously the case. Is that intentional? I can simplify that if so, because right now we have post_notitle for pages with images vs normal post pages. could stop calling the _notitle template if so.

sidebar capitalization

Can we title case the program entries? That seems consistent with our subhead capitalization. The all lowercase just seems jarring compared to Source, MozFest, and the general site style (aside from the top menu items).

code and community support landing page

  • the intro block is LONG. can we break up into two sections?
  • Also, maybe it's possible to shorten this:
"The developers, journalists, and data wranglers who make up the news code community work in newsrooms (and affiliated organizations) around the world, shipping interactive features, code libraries, and support systems at newsroom pace: fast."

like, either give the list of people and that they work at newsroom pace: fast OR say "the news code community" and list the types of work. basically, it seems like we don't need to list both the people and the things they do, but listing either or would give the same information and make this a snappier opening.
also, maybe we can pull the shorthand for the community from whatever we decide from #203

  • link up Source Jobs in the Source blurb
  • in the event sponsorship section the final link should be to the sponsorship page directly: /what/community/eventsupport.html
  • maybe also rename the event sponsorship to event support so it matches the menu item?

add questions to fellowships/apply.html

I just realized that the fellowship application page (http://mozillaopennews.org/fellowships/apply.html) on the site does NOT automatically update from the Blue State Digital form (https://sendto.mozilla.org/page/signup/join-knight-mozilla-fellows). What's the best way to update the application page?

I added a section to the BSD form that should show up on that application page too. This is the section:
Additional information
Do you speak any languages other than English? If yes, please list them.
How did you hear about the fellowship?

Thanks for the help!

404 page doesn't work

@jdotpz: #228 created a 404 page which works locally, but up on jenkins still getting crusty old useless ones. not sure what's going on here, but I'm guessing it needs your assistance.

contact info in bios

in addition to the general opennews email in the footer, our mozilla email addresses should be accessible via our bios on the site. i will update this later, but just wanted to log a ticket while i was thinking about it.

[email protected] email

Hey JP, I think you originally got us set up with this. It seems it may have gotten borked in the email migration. Can you help us find out who is now getting these emails? Prior to the email migration, it was set up to email all of us--me, Dan, Erin, and Ryan. I think we also had a [email protected] and maybe also a [email protected] email set up.

Thanks for any info on this.

fellowship partner info page

some updates:

  • title should reflect title in issue #197
    concluding paragraph:
If you have any questions about becoming a fellowship partner for 2016, [mailto: [email protected] please contact us]. In the spring of 2015, we'll update this page with details about the application process to become a fellowship partner. And if being a fellowship partner doesn’t sound like a fit for your news organization next year, please check out the many other ways we [/getinvolved/newspartners.html partner with newsrooms].

(Exact wording up for editing, mostly just want to remove the form. We may update the form and I don't think we want to be on the hook for monitoring responses outside of the application period.)

mozfest info page

needs a link to announcement list
could make match issue #211 OR link to the mojo page: https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/community-mojo

I'm stumbling over this sentence a little:
"Join us in discussions, hands-on making, and wireframing, and help explore new ways to visualize data, present information, and foster connections between people interested in harnessing the power of the web to create great journalism."

Maybe "MozFest is a place for discussions, hands-on making, and wireframing. It's a chance to explore new ways to visualize data, present information, and foster connections between people interested in harnessing the power of the web to create great journalism."

event support

  • does this replace the hackdays page? if no, how are they different?
  • if it replaces, remove the hackdays link in the first line.
  • if it replaces, we may need to move over the tabletop code block so we can list events, or just deprecate that since the events have become far less frequent.
  • if it replaces, we should just link to the Source events listing somewhere in here too. Easiest place might be an addtional line in the second paragraph.
  • if based on issue #218 we're deprecating call wiki, we should switch community call link to /what/community/calls.html
  • in the list of projects, Treasury.io is listed twice, remove the second listing

Questions:
remove the wiki listing?
which email list should we be pointing people to?
which contact us email? probably [email protected]

community calls page

Question -- is this meant to replace the wiki page for calls?

  • updates to second paragraph:
"You can participate by calling in and listening, reading along on the etherpad during or after the call, or by [mailto: [email protected] contacting us] to get onto the agenda as a speaker—the calls are informal and friendly and a great way to ease into the wider conversation."

If this is replacing the wiki, we can remove the link to the wiki. Could replace it with: etherpad for next call: next call, January 21: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/opennews-calls-Jan21

and we should add two more etherpads:
December 10, 2014: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/opennews-calls-Dec10
January 7, 2015: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/opennews-calls-Jan7

text formatting -- code convening page

going to start listing pages that just need help with how text is rendering

  • the code convening example block looks a little weird, I think cause the list has slightly different styling than paragraph blocks.

meet the fellows sideblock

the "find out more" link is missing a /what/ in the URL and redirects to homepage rather than the meet page.

License?

This is a very nicely made site, and I would love to use it as a guide as I develop my own Jekyll site. What kind of license applies to this project? Would it be ok to fork and reuse parts of it?

srccon info page

  • link in first paragraph "the inaugural srccon" should be to srccon site (currently links to the page we are on)
  • in the final paragraph, need to link to the SRCCON emai list, which I think is this link? https://source.opennews.org/en-US/subscribe/ (I don't know what the URL for the email subscription directly would be, but if there's a URL that doesn't take you to a different website, that seems great)

Nice to haves

  • links to blog posts related to SRCCON
  • maybe a little blurb about when we expect to share info about SRCCON 2015?
