text-compressor's Introduction

text-compressor

A text compression tool written as part of Coding challenges

Encoder

In Encoder, we take the plain-ascii string and encode it to 0's and 1's using the Huffman tree and convert it into a byte array. Then we serialize the Object CompressedFileObject containing the Tree with code information and the byte array of the encoding. The serialized object size is significantly less in cases of large ascii files compared to small files as the tree information itself is huge in the latter cases.

Decoder

In Decoder, we take the serialized file object and deserialize it to get the Encoding Tree and byte array of the encoding. We then convert the byte array to a string of 0's and 1's. This string of 0's and 1's is then parsed using the Tree whence we get the Decoded string.

Process

The whole process of Encoding and Decoding is summarized below:

Sample Run

For the input

Given there is usually an unequal distribution of character occurrences in text
this can then be used to compress data by giving the most commonly occurring characters the shortest prefix.

The output looks as below

{ 188 { 77 { 35 {e 17 _ _} { 18 {u 8 _ _} { 10 {m 4 _ _} { 6 {b 3 _ _} {y 3 _ _}}}}} { 42 { 20 {a 10 _ _} {o 10 _ _}} { 22 {n 11 _ _} {i 11 _ _}}}} {

originalString
Given there is usually an unequal distribution of character occurrences in text this can then be used to compress data by giving the most commonly occurring
characters the shortest prefix.

The difference of the input.txt and decodedUncompressedText.txt can be found using:

$ diff input.txt decodedUncompressedText.txt
$

The size difference of the files is shown:

3.2M input.txt (Original file)
1.8M output.txt (Compressed file)
3.2M decodedUncompressedText.txt (Uncompressed and decoded file)

TODO

  1. Try looking into loading very large files - chunks wise possibility
