indigemoji's Introduction

Indigemoji

Indigemoji is a collection of indigenous flags and important symbols intended for usage on customizable chat platforms like Slack and Discord.

This is an a work in progress and will improve with contributions! The current emojiset are only the flags of North American indigenous nations, tribes, and other organizations found on Wikipedia - so lots of info is bound to be missing.

To keep the repo size down, I've excluded the Source images - but you can pull full-sized images and flags using the URLs in data

Installing on Slack

  • Get the emoji files by downloading this zip file or cloning the directory using git.
  • Install the browser extension Neutral Face Emoji Tools for Chrome or Firefox
  • Navigate to <your-slack-org>.slack.com/customize/emoji
  • Drag all of the files from the dist folder of the zip you downloaded to the "Drop Images Here" section on the emoji upload page

The emoji will be referenced via their respective file names. For example, :flag-caddo: is dist/flag-caddo.png

indigemoji's Issues

Missing flags

The wikimedia source is missing a large portion of even federally recognized tribes. I see a total of 117 flags here. There are around 570 federally recognized tribes in the US and a number of state recognized as well. Maybe also maintaining a list of missing flag icons could help in crowd-sourcing the effort.

Support cropping of unprocessed SVGs, so emoji shape more visible

Hi! Just tried to run the scripting parts here, so I could offer a PR on the project. I realized that's still WIP (which is a-ok), but also saw that some of the emoji have a ton of whitespace.

Would it be helpful if an image like this were cropped a bit?

If so, I'm trying out using this tool, and perhaps we could add it to the scripting once that parts ready to receive contributions :)

Let me know! Thanks for sharing the project on Twitter! ❤️

cd indigemoji
npm install svg-autocrop
mkdir -p input output
(cd input && wget https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Anishinabe.svg)
npx svg-autodrop
# An error throws related to compare.html, but ignore
# New file now at `output/Anishinabe.svg`
