NewsAggregator

News Aggregator that pulls news from reliable sources

How to run

after downloading the project, run main.go from the command line/Terminal and supply a NYT API key and a NewsAPI key. The command should look like this: go run main.go -nyt XXXX -news XXXX

Or alternatively you can build main.go and then just run ./main -nyt XXXX -news XXXX

Overview of Directories & Files

Giving a few notes on each directory in the project and noteworthy aspects of particular files...

NewsSources

For every news source the project tries to get data from, there is a file for each that handles that

Handlers

Depending on the url path, main.go calls the appropriate handler function to handle it. The handler functions call the News Source functions to gather data and ultimately pass all the data to the front end template

Front End

This is where all the html templates reside. They are passed data from the handler functions

Front End Assets

Anything extra the front end needs to polish it

Cross reference trending Twitter hashtags w news articles

See how correlated the news is with what is trending on social media. Maybe show a graph to see if the facet data from NYT is related to trends. See how/which certain articles shift the trends.

Unsure what this will lead to, but at the very least you can put what is trending either below the search bar in search page or in a small banner on home page.

Create/Connect PostgreSQL database with users and news articles

Need to create a PostgreSQL DB to store users and news articles.

For Users:
A form in signup.html has already been created. Just need to use the POST command to trigger commands to successfully populate the database. Use dbsample.go as a starter code.

No starter/sample code exists for storing news articles at time of writing (9/11/20)
