    msg.frame[0].data[0]   = 0x123;
    msg.frame[0].data[1]   = 0x312;
    msg.frame[0].data[2]   = 0x231;

AFAIK, this corresponds to

uint8_t * data = msg.frame[0].data;
data[0] = 0x123;
data[1] = 0x312;
data[2] = 0x231;

Which assigns an unsigned int to an uint8_t, throwing away all but the least significant byte, at best.
