economist-to-kindle's Issues

Login and OPF creation not working

Let me just say that I am so glad I found this script. I recently got a Kindle and have been searching ever since how to get the Economist onto it. Unfortunately, the Kindle editions published on Amazon aren't available where I live (Australia) and so I'm left with no recourse, despite having a subscription. Annoying right?

Anyway, to the heart of the problem. I'm not at all experienced with scripting, but it seems to me that some header formatting or something has changed on the Economist's website that the login function is no longer working. As for why the OPF file isn't getting made properly, I have no idea...

Here's the relevant output from running the script (the first two lines):
Economist ="n xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm, xml:lang="en" (xml:lang="en"0x)
Creating OPF file: economist_xml:lang="en"0x.opf... done!

I'm running the script on Windows 7. Also, does that means I have to flip all the directory references from /'s to 's? Or else is there someway to run the script in a Linux environment on Windows, if that would be easier?

Thanks for any help!

Latest Economist.com Update

Hey Nic,
It seems like perhaps the website has been updated again, as the script is no longer working for me. My last successful issue was early October, if that's any assistance.
Cheers,
Guzzo

Progress bar and location absent

Hey Nic,
So for the last few .mobi files that have been churned out by the script, the percentage read and location numbers have been absent - the last issue that still had these features was from February 4. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?
(EDIT: if it's of any assistance, the location numbers come up if I open the .mobi file in Kindle for PC.)
(EDIT #2: I tested the problem by sending a text-only version of the latest Economist and the problem is solved. This leads me to believe that the size of the mobi file involved has something to do with it. Maybe having the pictures converted into grey-scale would downsize them and fix the problem?)
Also, could I make a suggestion for possible formatting improvements? I don't have any idea how feasible this is, or how much work would be involved, but would it be possible to make the output of each edition have progress bars for each article and a larger-format table of contents (ร  la Instapaper article summaries sent to Kindle)?
Cheers, and Happy Easter,
Guzzo

Email

Hey Nic,
Sorry to bug you again, but is there anything I need to do apart from putting in the to and from emails into the script for the emailing to work? I'm using my gmail address, which has https as standard, and is on the Kindle's white list... Any ideas?
Thanks again!
Guzzo

Not currently working

As of 2015-01-22, it appears this script isn't working.

I'm not using it anymore; if someone else is still using it and would like to debug the issue, that would be swell :)
