zotero-scholar-citations's Introduction

Note

This repo was forked from https://github.com/beloglazov/zotero-scholar-citations and https://github.com/MaxKuehn/zotero-scholar-citations.

This repo aims to make ZSC works better with Google Scholar, especially in China, and fix some minor problems by the way.

New features:

Changelog

v2.0.5

  • Adaptation for Zotero 6.0;

v2.0.6

  • Simplify the updating process;
  • Shrinkage the count string length of ZSCC ("ZSCC: 0000001" => "ZSCC:00001");
  • Remove state indicator of staleness;

v2.1.0

  • Add auto updating;
  • Improve the query url with multiple authors;
  • Add preference for base query url (beta);

Development

  1. Clone this source code.
  2. Create a text file in the 'extensions' directory of your Zotero profile directory (refer to this for your profile path) named after the extension id [email protected]. The file contents should be the absolute path to the root of your plugin source code directory, where your install.rdf file is located.
  3. Open prefs.js in the Zotero profile directory in a text editor and delete the lines containing extensions.lastAppBuildId and extensions.lastAppVersion. Save the file and restart Zotero. This will force Zotero to read the extensions' directory and install your plugin from source, after which you should see it listed in Tools → Add-ons. This is only necessary once.
  4. Run zotero with argments -purgecaches -ZoteroDebug, for example:

    ./zotero.exe -purgecaches -ZoteroDebug

Zotero Scholar Citations (ZSC)

This is an add-on for Zotero, a research source management tool. The add-on automatically fetches numbers of citations of your Zotero items from Google Scholar and makes it possible to sort your items by the citations. Moreover, it allows batch updating the citations, as they may change over time.

Read about how the add-on was made: http://blog.beloglazov.info/2009/10/zotero-citations-from-scholar-en.html

Batching & CAPTCHAs

When updating multiple citations in a batch, it may happen that citation queries are blocked by Google Scholar for multiple automated requests. If a blockage happens, the add-on opens a browser window and directs it to http://scholar.google.com/, where you should see a Captcha displayed by Google Scholar, which you need to enter to get unblocked and then re-try updating the citations. It may happen that Google Scholar displays a message like the following "We're sorry... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." In that case, the only solution is to wait for a while until Google unblocks you.

Installation

The add-on supports Zotero Standalone. To install it:

  1. Download the lastest version of the add-on from the release page. It's an ".xpi" file.
  2. In Zotero (Standalone) go to Tools -> Add-ons -> click the settings button in the top-right corner -> Install Add-on From File -> select the downloaded file and restart Zotero.

Extra Column Info

Currently, Zotero doesn't have any special field for the number of citations, that's why it is stored in the "Extra" field. To sort by this field you have to add it in the source listing table.

New Format in 1.8

In version 1.8 the field for storing the number of citations has been changed from "Call Number" to "Extra" -- please update your column configuration.

New Format in 2.0.x

Version 2.0.0 introduced a new format for storing the citation count, i.e. ZSCC: 0000001. Unfortunately that means existing pre 2.0.0 entries are incompatible in terms of sorting and you have to update them.

Migration Tips

If you just straight up update your entire collection you're bound to run into a captcha. Once you do run into one, all following queued update request will fail and you will be prompted for each and every one of them. Consider updating your collection in batches of 5-10 items at a time.

This limitation is a major inconvenience and fixing or at least alleviating it is the first thing on the priorty list (see the RoadMap).

Staleness

As of Version 2.0.2 items whose citation count could not be updated will be marked with a staleness counter [s0], e.g. ZSCC: 0000042[s0], to signal the user that ZSC was unable to update the number of citations.

If ZSC continuesly fails to update an item, it increases the staleness count up to a maximum of 9 and then wraps around.

The format of the staleness counter allows you to search for items with stale citation data by entering [s in Zoteros search bar.

Existing "Extra"-Column Content

ZSC will

  • update legacy ZSC "extra"-content, i.e. 5 digit citation counts and "No Citation Data" entries
  • respect content that is already in the "Extra"-field by simply prepending the citation count to any existing content
    • this allows you to sort by the extra field to easily get the most/least cited items

When Updates fail

Consider temporary cutting out/deleting the "Extra" content. ZSC will update the citation count. After that you can simply append the previously removed information.

Why is ZSC unable retrieve the citation count for item X?

The most likely culprit is that ZSC search is too precise :^). Some Items do not have as complete of an author list on google scholar as they have in Zotero.

Here's how you can find out weather that's the problem

  1. in Zotero enable debug out Help > Debug Output Logging > enable
  2. then open the debug console Help > Debug Output Logging > View Output
  3. try to update the item again
  4. look out for something like this [scholar-citations] GET https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_q=THE_TITLE_OF_YOUR_ITEM&as_epq=&as_occt=title&num=1&as_sauthors=AUTHOR1+AUTHOR2+AUTHOR3
  5. Copy & Paste that search link into a web browser of your choice
  6. try removing different authors from the search

One combination of authors will certainly yield the correct search.

You can also temporarly recreate that combination in Zotero. ZSC will then successfully query that item. Once you re-add the author however, updates will fail again. :(

RoadMap

The RoadMap can be found here.

Why the Fork

The original maintainer Anton Beloglazov seems semi-active.

Texot fixed some stuff that needed fixing BADLY, that is

  • Fix detection of google robot checking
  • Show No Citation Data in failure cases instead of 00000

But there's more that should be done!

zotero-scholar-citations's Issues

Thanks for your work!

The new version is much better than the old version of the original author,and solved the Google captcha problem in China. Very useful!

Cannot get the Captcha

It appears that "Please enter the Captcha on the page that will now open and then re-try updating the citations, or wait a while to get unblocked by Google if the Captcha is not present."
But nothing happens after a long time or after clicking OK button.

Would you mind helping on this? Thanks!

Enhance: set the format saved in Extra

I know that the format in Extra changed once, and it is different from that in the original plugin developed by beloglazov. I personally like the original format because I can easily show the citation number for each item.

image

However, using ZSCC, the text is too long and there are too many zeros as place holders there. Sometimes, Zotero saves some texts in Extra, but they are never useful for me. So I use Extra only for showing the citation number. I personally prefer the format by the original plugin. Maybe adding a war to choose or set the format.

New Google scholar UI problem

It seems that Google scholar has updated the UI and thus the citaton update fails.
For example, I got "neither got meaningful text or captcha, please check it in log" when I tried to update the citation number of this article:
https://scholar.google.com/scholar?as_q=&as_epq=Climate%20change%20will%20affect%20the%20Asian%20water%20towers&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=Walter%20W.+Immerzeel&as_ylo=2010&as_yhi=2010&as_sdt=1.&as_sdtp=on&as_sdtf=&as_sdts=22&.
I'm using the newest version of the addon.
Maybe a solution can be found in this repository.

Wrong citation number

I have found the addon return wrong citation numbers for this article. I got ZSCC:00013. But the citation number should be 0.
I don't know the reason. Could you please fix this error? Thank you very much for the maintenance.

Add an option for Google scholar baseurl

It is difficult to access Google scholar without a proxy in China, so could you add an option to set the baseurl of Google scholar with a mirror site or to use an HTTP proxy to access Google scholar?

Not overwrite the ZSCC value in the Extra field after 'Update citation(s)'

This issue occurs in the new version 2.1.0. If the original extra field is ZSCC:00000, i.e. without any other fields and keys, then the citation update won’t overwrite the existing value. Instead, it will output

ZSCC:00001

ZSCC:00000

If the extra field is something like

ZSCC:00000

Publisher: Cambridge University Press

then the update will be normal:

ZSCC:00001

Publisher: Cambridge University Press
