### NOIR

---

#### Official Repositories

---

The official repositories for NOIR Linux maintained by Daniel M. Matongo.

More information:

    - https://repology.org/repository/noir

---

NOIR is an independent Linux® distribution with a focus on performance and practical functionality.

---

1. Whats Different?

---

NOIR aims to become a minimal general purpose distro for
your pleasure;

- Cutting down on all dependancies and all other bloat to provide you with a functional distro
with as few packages and a much less combined package weight
  as possible.

- Taking notes from Wyverkiss we want to be as GNU free as we
can and if we can't at least make GNU software optional.

- We also strive for stability in as much as we love functional minimalism.

2. BINARIES

---

NOTE: This assumes that the user trusts the source of the binary packages.

Regularly updated binaries are provided for the following packages:

- Firefox
- Chromium
- LLVM

Binaries for NOIR (musl) -> https://github.com/kiss-community/repo-bin

### Installing binaries

- Modify `KISS_PATH` such that the `bin` repository takes priority over other repositories:

$ export KISS_PATH=/path/to/main/bin:$KISS_PATH

- The packages can now be installed by a simple [kiss b $PKG && kiss i $PKG] command.

main's Issues

Remove symlinks

Repology is not a fan of the new KISS package source vars, they need to be removed.

UPDATE ALL PACKAGES

TODO

  • Update all packages
  • Automate updates (pending)
  • Create build pipeline to ensure that core packages are building successfully
  • Ensure all packages build

Add Compilers to repo

  • Nim
  • Haskell
  • Go
  • Lua
  • Ocaml
  • R [r-lang]
  • Ruby
  • Vala
  • Racket (Minimal)
  • Crystal
  • Fortran (Technically a compiler)
  • D [d-lang]
  • Janet
  • V [v-lang]
  • Chez Scheme
  • GForth
  • PForth
  • LuaJIT
  • Retro
  • C# (mono)
  • #21
  • Zig

GCC yay or nay?

Consider switching away from gcc.

LLVM is a strong alternative, however this would drastically fracture all future plans for noir albeit impermanent, it'll be a notable drawback.

Considerations:

  • Migrate to LLVM []

Benefits to noir:

Parity NOIR and KISS Community repo

Kiss Comunity switched the KISS package manager to blake3. A change I personally would like to avoid.

Options are;

  1. Switch to blake3
  2. Modify kiss to account for both (obfuscation)
  3. Maintain a separate Community repo

Tarball size

TODO:

  • Make tarball smaller < 40 would be ideal

Change release naming style.

The current style is non descriptive.
2021m could easily be mistaken for a 2021-march or 2021-may

New convention will be
YEAR-MONTH-RELEASE
i.e
2021-AUG-1.tar.xz

Drop X.org

With wayland adoption increasing I should consider dropping wayland.
