I have created a custom vim syntax file, at ~/.config/nvim/syntax/custom1.vim
This has nothing to do with treesitter, and by extension this project.

@clason I took a look at the documentation but, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working. I've started trying multiple combinations of the following (now commented out) lines, to see if something would make a difference:
require'nvim-treesitter.configs'.setup {
ensure_installed = { "c", "cpp", "lua", "markdown", "markdown_inline", "python", "vim" },
sync_install = false,
highlight = {
enable = true,
disable = { "latex", },
--disable = { "markdown,"},
--disable = {"custom1"},
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--additional_vim_regex_highlighting = { "custom1", "markdown", },
--additional_vim_regex_highlighting = { "markdown", },
--additional_vim_regex_highlighting = { "custom1", },
--additional_vim_regex_highlighting = false,
--additional_vim_regex_highlighting = true,
},
}
At the beginning, actually, it did work only once; unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention and don't know which combination was responsible for it. I've since tried to make it work again, but without success.

You cannot inject legacy regex highlighting into a tree-sitter parsed buffer. For this to work as expected, you need to disable treesitter for markdown completely and rely on the legacy syntax.
