Hey! I know this is a old piece of code that might no be relevant anymore but, working on my own app I had the same issue where the button wouldn't become active on my compose code, the snipped below fixes the issue.

add this imports

import com.google.android.gms.cast.framework.CastContext
import com.google.android.gms.cast.framework.CastStateListener

then on like 59 on MainActivity this:

        CastContext.getSharedInstance(this).addCastStateListener(CastStateListener { state ->
            //CastState.CONNECTED || CastState.CONNECTING ... etc
        })

should work now, hopefully it helps if anyone else finds themselves here.
