Dear Ronan,
please define in which instantiation (edition) of 1993 you detect these
variants in punctuation: Vintage NY paperback (1993), Norton Critical
Edition (2007, is it?), Vintage London (2012) or the Vintage London
e-book (2015, I believe)? I take it your main reference instantiation is
the Garland full critical edition of 1993.

I take it your main reference instantiation is the Garland full critical edition of 1993.
It is indeed. I have access to it in the office. When I got home, I doublechecked these instances in the 2007 Norton Critical Edition. All agree with the 1993 Garland. And just there now I checked them in the 2012 Vintage. All agree with the 1993 Garland.
I don’t know if there are issues of accidentals in the other chapters – or more in Chapter IV – but certainly something has gone awry.

which means that you have spotted the three differences in punctuation
you cite in the Open Editions instantiation as prepared by me for
Jonathan and 'netlified' by him? This looks dauntingly as if I would
have to rig up a TUSTEP collation between my digital source text (which
I used to prepare the Open Edition text, in the first place) on my
computer and the Open Editions text. The snag in all this is that Open
Edition started with a text version prior to the 1993 critical edition
text. What I did was to 'implant' into that text the critically
established text changes plus the line fall from the critical text. It
is conceivable that I overlooked punctuation differences such as the
ones you have spotted -- punctuation departing from that of the critical
edition would in that case be punctuation from the 'over-written'
pre-1993 text. Oh dear.
Could you please tell me more precisely how you came to discover those
three instances of punctuation mishaps in the Open Edition text
instantiation?

punctuation from the 'over-written' pre-1993 text
I’m afraid that’s likely it then, Hans. Maybe there’s a way to strip all of the markup out of this Open Editions text and do a simple collation against your authoritative 1993 files?
How I discovered the disparity: I was comparing the quotations from A Portrait in Kenneth Burke’s ’Fact, Inference, and Proof‘ essay from the 1950s for a point I wanted to make about editions. He cites the 1940s Signet reset, and I was comparing his quotations to the 1916 and 1993 editions. I was using Open Editions just to quickly determine line numbers in the 1993, but that’s when I noticed the disparity between the online edition and what I was seeing in the Garland critical edition. There were over a dozen quotations from the novel in Burke’s essay, but it was these three from Chapter IV that, in the online version, retained punctuation from the earlier editions.
