openelections-data-us's Introduction

Build Status

openelections-data-us

This repository contains pre-processed election results for president from all states, so far for the 2016 general election only. Caveats and notes on specific types of files are below.

County-level files

County-level files include results from every state except Alaska, which does not have county equivalents. The District of Columbia is included and is treated as a single "county" for the purposes of this file. For Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, the results are at the town level instead of the county level. All results are from official certified results files published by the states and D.C. Wisconsin's 2016 results are from the state's post-election recount.

Caveats

These files are collections of multiple states and as such they are not uniform in what they contain. Some states provide vote totals for each county and statewide, while others provide under votes and over votes. Some states provide write-in votes as a single bloc while others break them out by recipient. In addition, candidate and party names can differ across states for the same person or party, particularly for minor-party candidates. If you're going to do some sort of analysis or mapping of this data, you'll need to standardize the contents of the files first.

openelections-data-us's Issues

Florida?

20161108__us__general__president__county.csv doesn't include the sunshine state.

IA missing counties

The below counties are missing from the national file. It's a clean alphabetical gap.

Page
Palo Alto
Plymouth
Pocahontas
Polk
Pottawattamie
Poweshiek
Ringgold
Sac
Scott
Shelby
Sioux

MA partial data

Looks like this is on the township level, but only includes 25 of the 251 Municipalities.

TN duplicate rows

Tennessee appears to be duplicated in national county file.

open_el is a pandas dataframe.

open_el[(open_el.state=='TN')&(open_el.county=='Anderson')]

IN 2016 County Names and Totals

Indiana County Names to fix:
'Clar':'Clark' ,'LaPort':'La Porte'
A state wide rollup of Indiana is -1164 for Trump, and +3300 for Clinton. The error for Trump is distributed across the state, I haven't looked into Clinton yet.

ME UOCAVA

Maine rolls up statewide Federal UOCAVA to a single reporting unit, ~4K votes.

Should that line be included in the national table?

State Totals in County table?

Not sure if this is an issue per-se, more a data standards question.

Should the national county table also include rows for statewide totals?

Or in states with both county and township (i.e. NH) should totals at both levels be included?
