Although this is great solution for dev, something to consider before applying the patch:

Perhaps there should be a config so that you can change the SSL settings for testing but not in production. (Note: I still need to reread the Hueniverse article, I only skimmed it but wanted to make sure to report it here before the latest fire pulls me in a new direction).
