Overview

This repository contains the Docker build definition and release process for openzipkin/zipkin-gcp.

This layers Google Cloud Platform support on the base zipkin docker image.

Currently, this adds Stackdriver Trace storage

Running

By default, this image will search for credentials in a json file at $GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS

If you want to try Zipkin against Stackdriver, the easiest start is to share your credentials with Zipkin's docker image.

$ docker run -d -p 9411:9411 \
  -e STORAGE_TYPE=stackdriver \
  -e GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS=/root/.gcp/credentials.json \
  -e STACKDRIVER_PROJECT_ID=your_project \
  -v $HOME/.gcp:/root/.gcp:ro \
  openzipkin/zipkin-gcp

Configuration

Configuration is via environment variables, defined by zipkin-gcp.

In docker, the following can also be set:

* `JAVA_OPTS`: Use to set java arguments, such as heap size or trust store location.

Stackdriver Configuration variables are detailed here.

Does not forward anything to Stackdriver Trace from GKE.

When I run the docker command

docker run -d -p 9411:9411 \ 
-e STORAGE_TYPE=stackdriver \
-e GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS=/var/secret/google/key.json \
-e STACKDRIVER_PROJECT_ID=<ID> \
-v $HOME/Desktop/googleKeys:/var/secret/google openzipkin/zipkin-gcp

I successfully start the image and see logs for the zipkin server. But I only see a 404, when i visit the host/port of the server in the browser.

In the regular zipkin docker image I see the web UI. Acutally / reroutes to /zipkin which serves the UI.

I'm really running this as a deployment behind a service in GKE, and nothing is being forwarded to Trace. Looking for a way to debug.

Traces fail to send to stackdriver

I recently upgraded my deployment of zipkin-gcp to 0.10.0, at which point traces were no longer making it into Stackdriver.

Upon enabling DEBUG mode on the zipkin deployment, I was able to see the failures resulting in the traces not sent to Stackdriver:

I have since rolled back to 0.9.0 and all is well.

Unable to start Docker Container

As part of the move to the Apache Software Foundation this repository will transfer ownership to apache and name to incubator-zipkin-docker-zipkin-gcp.
