What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download theme to Wordpress installation
2. Activate theme
3. Reload Wordpress

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: Basic theme with sidebar/widgets
Actual: No sidebar/widgets displayed, no matter which layout CSS file is 
imported. The center column puts itself in the right place, but sidebar 
locations stay plain white.
Please provide any additional information below.

that pesky ! was keeping widgets from showing up at all!

according to discussion on the Ian's blog, the nought mark (!) is a bug in this 
code. The bug was fixed in the blog's code snippet, but not here. It is 
corrected with due respect to the coder.

Fix for widget preset code. Fix the check for theme activation. Widgets must be 
called with '-2' after them to appear correctly.
