spam_email's Introduction

SpamEmail

If you have to reach out to your users with important information and they signed up with a trash e-mail address you're not like to get the desired attention.This gem checks the e-mail address domain against a blacklist of trash mail providers.

Gem Version

Installation

Add this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'spam_email'

And then execute:

$ bundle

Or install it yourself as:

$ gem install spam_email

Usage

Be advised that the validation checks NOT if a correct e-mail address is given. Validation will pass with empty string/nil value! Checking the input with valid_email or at least checking presence: true is strongly recommendend!

class User < ActiveRecord::Base
  validates :email, presence: true, spam_email: true
end

or specify a custom message with (the gem comes with en/de/fr locales):

validates :email, presence: true, spam_email: { message: "is a blacklisted provider!" }

If you want to add/remove providers you can use an initializer and modify SpamEmail::Blacklist. To disable a provider just set the hash value for the domain to false. You can add new domains by modifing the hash.

You can also check the blacklist directly:

SpamEmail.blacklisted?(email)

spam_email's Issues

Please remove qaqmail.com from the blacklist.

Hey,

I don't know what qaqmail.com was doing before.

I registered this domain name in February this year and used it as my private mail service.

Please remove it from the blacklist.

IP-based method

Hey @korny

just an idea, because it might be easier to scale: we once had the idea to perform a lookup of the ip addreses of the MX records of the domains in the list and generate a list of the mailserver IPs.

Then the e-mail validation cloud check the MX record of the email domain against that list. It's much harder to get more IP addresses than domains, so that might be a more effective list to manage.

Just an idea, maybe you find it worth looking into.

Also block subdomains

If a domain is in the blacklist, all subdomains should also be blocked.

  • Blacklist can be reduced
  • More addresses can be caught

Example
Domain is "luk2.com" with lots of subdomains like "aahs.luk2.com", "ac.luk2.com", ...
