phpmentoring.github.com's Issues

Timeout on messaging page

There seems to be an issue if I don't submit a message in a certain time period. Several times I have been mid writing a message, and when I click Submit I'm redirected to my personal profile page and the message hasn't been sent. Sometimes I'm lucky and can rely on my browser to go back to the page and retrieve the contents, other times I've not immediately noticed and lost all the information I've sent. I haven't looked at the codebase to work out why this happens yet but I'm happy to help a mentee debug and submit a PR to fix this?

Empty page?

Did something go wrong? I came here looking around and saw this empty page, where there used to be a list of mentors and apprentices.

This project needs an web app

I've just came accross this really intriguing project (http://www.phptherightway.com/#resources).
Even though I'm neither looking for mentoring nor being mentored right now, I've found the idea really interesting and worth supporting.
But when I was looking at the list itself (https://github.com/phpmentoring/phpmentoring.github.com/wiki/Mentors-and-Apprentices) I imediatly thought:
Why is this not an app?

I just found that you are planning to setup such an app judging by this:
https://github.com/phpmentoring/webapp

Unfortunately it seems you haven't gotten far. ;-/

Because of this I want to foster some discussion about how this app should look like and what features it should have.

Just some ideas I've had:

  • Search seems to me a very important part of this. Because of this you should provide two ways of searching (for mentors/for apprentices). Just as we know it from sites like oDesk:
    https://www.odesk.com/o/profiles/
    https://www.odesk.com/o/jobs/
  • Search criterias would improve the quality of the search and thus the matching. Such criterias should be: region, language, age, students (and probably more).
  • Also it would improve the matching even more if you could state what you search and what you can provide by keywords. If you know XING (like LinkedIn), it could be like this.

So Rachid, 25, CS student from India, is looking for someone who can mentor him with general PHP, HTML5 and CakePHP at best. He would certainly prefer someone who speaks his language, but optionally could speak in English.
And Frank, 38, senior PHP developer from Germany, in a big company, wants to volunteer and has some specialties in AJAX and speaks french as a second language.

Greetings from Switzerland

Rename repo

this should be changed to a github.io name at some point

Long email threads

Firstly, this project is a great initiative and I have already gained a lot as a mentee and mentor. I have a couple of issues that I don't mind creating a PR for. My main bug-bear is the long email threads. After a couple of messages back and forth I have to do a lot of scrolling to get through to the most recent messages. This is particularly annoying on a mobile phone. A solution to this might be to introduce pagination for long running conversations, or use some accordion/concertina style folding in the UI. Or simply to reverse the order of the messages so the most recent/new is at the top of the page!
Do you have any opinions on how this should be done? I'm willing to help a mentee create a PR to do this.
