"Ni no kuni" tools, hacks and docs

Ni no kuni is a JRPG game developed by Level-5 and Studio Ghibli for the Nintendo DS. It was released only in Japan in December 2010. One year later was released a different version for PS3 in all regions.

As a part of the GradienWords team I have created a set of tools, hacks and documentation to translate the game into Spanish. You can follow the progress of our translation in the Twitter account.

Keyboard: Saved game name is empty

Hello,

The keyboard work for the familiars name and i thank you for that. It's a great hack !

But the keyboard is used to add a name on the saved game at the begining, and the name is empty after validate it. Can you look that to correct this, please ?

And another thing: You can improve this game by doing a similar hack of fix_familiar_length (name with 7 chars instead of only 4) on the three ways the kerboard is used: The savedgame name could use 11 chars instead of only 6, and password when you catch the cauldron in bikini to 19 chars instead of 10. If you can know where that values are, it will be perfect to customize them.

Really cool that you share all that work with us !

Keyboard: give more spaces on password and saved game name

Hi,
I open another issue :
I have said
"You can improve this game by doing a similar hack of fix_familiar_length (names with 7 chars instead of only 4) on the three ways the kerboard is used: The savedgame name could use 11 chars instead of only 6, and password when you catch the cauldron in bikini to 19 chars instead of 10. For the saved game name, it could be useful to give users a way to add their real name in.
For french, you have 'Jean-jacques' or for spanish 'Cristobal' that the game could save without hang and the japanese limitation abort this try.
And if this is not a real name, a long nickname couldn't be saved too, like 'Ouioui2003' or 'Pleonex'...

For the password, the french translation for the Cauldron password in bikini is "Belle-âme, ouvre toi", so 20 chars (Remember: I translate this game with all materials picked up in the PS3 version). For now, there is no way to use it.

I have hack your keyboard to use it with my own fonts, and i can put 8 chars (the max) on the familiars name (It's because my keyboard use only 1 byte chars). So, with a fix_password_length hack, i hope i could use 20 chars on passwords and put the PS3 translation in.
But I need you for that work, because i don't know how to use a debugger with DS games.
I don't know for now how to find the offset of that values.

Regards

Add the ingame book

Hi

Another real difficult enhancement:

In the game, you can see in the items bag that you have a tab with all importants stuffs in.
The only item that have a green button on the right side is "the book".
In the Level5 Premium Platinum Demo of Ninokuni, the book haven't the green button in the bag.

I think the developers wanted to put the ingame book here, but had changed their minds and replace that with only a message.

book_button_compare
Perhaps, the code to the ingame book is already here, just switched with the message and left there like dead code.

We all know that the game have plenty graphs from the demo version. Maybe it could be possible to replace the code behind the green button by the dead code, or grab the ingame book launcher in the demo version.

tgsbook_

After have it activated, it will be another story to add all runes not in the game.

Support PC version of the magic book

I'm trying to localize the remastered version for my language, Brazilian Portuguese, but I got stuck on the book.
I know the tool is for PS3, but if you could provide some assistance, I would appreciate it.

I don't know much about programming, but I asked an AI to create a Python script for me. I managed to extract .gvd files from the .dat, but I noticed from the header
that it seems to be multiple .dds files per page.
Script ->
extractbook.zip

I'll leave it here when the error logs when I try to use the tool "ExtrackooB.exe".
log_erro.txt

thanks for your help

Improve time display

Hi,

Here is a enhancement:
When you want to really finish the game, you can spend many time to do it.
The timer saved in the saved game only show hours before 100.

If the game save a timestamp in the saved file, it could be nice to have the real time shown on the screen.
Add one more digit on hours and the game can display at least 999 hours !

time

Thanks for that !
