zoning-metadata's Issues

Update for SB 50

Throwing out an issue on what would be required to update this epic analysis for the new SB 50 introduced this year.

Haven't had time to read the bill yet so working off this LAT summary.

"Wiener made three major changes to the bill that aim to soften opposition from tenant groups and their allies that helped torpedo the prior effort. The legislation blocks developers from using the bill if they planned to knock down properties that renters had occupied within at least the previous seven years. It also allows communities facing pressures from gentrification and displacement to propose alternative plans to boost homebuilding instead of using the system outlined in the bill. And it loosens local zoning restrictions in communities with high median incomes, quality schools and short commutes to jobs, even if there isn’t access to transit nearby β€” an effort to push development into wealthier areas that might have previously resisted it."

Not sure how to quantify the potential impact of these changes within this existing analytical framework. Pretty sure there isn't data available on the bolded section.

My cursory reading of this is that if the parameters about distance from transit and others (parking etc) are the same in SB 50 as SB 827, then this analysis about the new housing potential should all hold.

Still need to upgrade the underlying parcel level land use data across CA... :)

Expand via International Open Data Day?

Interested in working to expand this analysis as part of International Open Data Day 3/3? Could be a nice way to get other CfA brigades from around the state contributing. Would be good to polish up the contributing guidelines including how the 827 metadata fields are generated, iron out where to get transit data outside of SCAG region (guessing go to the local MPO / COG), find more zoning and land use data etc

Where to get transit data?

If you want to expand this to all of CA, it seems like it would be a lot of work to get all the transit data for the entire state.

Are you considering any shortcuts for getting that data? For example, maybe asking the folks who made http://transitrichhousing.org if you could you their data?
